Position: Assistant Professor -History of the South

Assistant Professor - History of the South

Texas Southern University invites applications for a tenure‑track Assistant Professor position in the History of the South, to begin in the fall 2026 semester. We seek a dynamic scholar and dedicated educator who will contribute to the Department of History and interdisciplinary programs.

Job Overview

The successful candidate will be expected to teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in the History of the South and related topics. The standard teaching load is 3 courses per semester. The position requires an active and successful research agenda, student advising, and service to the department, college, and university.

Responsibilities
  • Teach undergraduate courses in the History of the South, including specialized topics.
  • Develop and teach graduate seminars.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, including supervising thesis research.
  • Maintain an active, independent research program in the History of the South or a closely related field.
  • Produce peer‑reviewed publications and present research at regional and national conferences.
  • Pursue external funding opportunities to support scholarly activities.
  • Serve on departmental, college, and university committees.
  • Engage in outreach with local historical societies, archives, and communities.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Ph.D. in History from an accredited institution (ABD candidates considered if degree in hand by Jan. 1, 2026).
  • Specialization in the History of the South (any chronological period or subfield).
  • Evidence of, or potential for, excellence in university‑level teaching.
  • A promising record of research and scholarship.

Preferred:

  • Thematic expertise that complements current faculty strengths.
  • Experience teaching U.S. history survey courses.
  • Experience or interest in utilizing digital humanities tools in research and teaching.
Salary

FTE: 1.0

Hiring range: $62,948.28–$81,832.00
