Primary

Purpose:

Responsible for the instructional program and guidance of students identified with Autism or related disorders who require instructional accommodations and modifications as well as behavioral and communication strategies to make progress on the general education curriculum.

Qualifications / Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in related field.
  • Valid Texas Teacher Certificate or out‑of‑state teaching certificate appropriate for the position.
  • ESL certification required during the first year if it has not yet been obtained.
  • Certification must meet all federal and state requirements for this position.
Special Knowledge / Skills
  • Knowledge of structured teaching strategies specific to students with Autism.
  • Extensive knowledge of effective instructional practices for students with Autism and communication disorders.
  • Proficiency in developing and implementing effective behavior intervention plans for students with moderate behavior concerns.
  • Proficiency in collecting data to establish strengths, needs, and goals for specialized instruction based on grade‑level standards and functional needs, including progress monitoring.
  • Physical capacity to lift, transfer, and assist students with physical disabilities (e.g., ability to lift 50 lb).
  • Training in de‑escalation and restraint techniques required by the district.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in the effective use of technology.
  • Ability to work effectively with both adults and children.
Major Duties and Responsibilities Instructional Strategies
  • Adhere to the district’s philosophy of instruction and develop lesson plans that fulfill curriculum requirements and demonstrate written preparation evidence.
  • Prepare lessons with accommodations and/or modifications for diverse learning styles and present subject matter per Texas Education Agency guidelines.
  • Participate in the identification/evaluation of learner competencies.
  • Recommend appropriate goals/objectives for learner needs.
  • Assist in developing and documenting students’ IEPs.
  • Follow specific instructional objectives based on each student’s learning style.
  • Maintain data related to student goals and progress within the curriculum.
  • Implement new methodologies, philosophies, and innovations.
Student Growth and Development
  • Help students refine study methods and habits through ongoing assessment of achievement.
  • Provide positive role modeling and support the school district’s mission.
  • Assist students with physical disabilities.
Classroom Management and Organization
  • Create a learning environment conducive to the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Manage behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and handbook.
  • Take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities and assist in selecting instructional resources.
  • Attend required meetings and complete required reports.
Communication
  • Establish and maintain open communication with parents, students, principals, and teachers through conferences and meetings.
  • Use effective communication to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to meet learner needs.
  • Consult with parents and school personnel regarding each student’s intellectual, academic, social, emotional, and physical development.
Professional Growth and Development
  • Maintain certification in the district’s crisis prevention and intervention program.
  • Participate in staff development to improve job‑related skills and comply with state, district, and school regulations.
  • Compile, maintain, and file required physical and computerized reports and records.
  • Attend faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
