Primary Purpose:

To maintain, organize and administer the overall campus choir program in a way that will encourage each participating student to achieve a high level of skill, an appreciation for the values of discipline and teamwork, and an increased level of self-esteem.
Qualifications:

Education/Certification:
  • Bachelor's degree in Music from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate for music and level assigned
  • ESL Certification preferred or ESL Certification required within two (2) years of employment beginning with teachers hired in 2010-11 school year
Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of subjects assigned
  • General knowledge of design and delivery issues related to alignment for best results in student achievement
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
  • Student teaching or approved internship
Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Strategies
  • Direct school vocal performers, including concert choir, soloists, and ensembles.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of district's curriculum program and maintain evidence of written proof.
  • Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles.
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect accommodation for individual needs of students assigned.
  • Conduct assessments of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  • Cooperate with other members of staff for planning and implementing instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s).
  • Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
  • Assist students in analyzing and improving study methods and habits.
  • Consistently assess student achievement through formal and informal assessments and use results to plan instructional activities.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.
  • Schedule on-going weekly sectionals or rehearsals to advance student achievement for music students.
  • Demonstrate proficient musical skills within the classroom setting.
  • Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  • Participate in district defined music activities, festivals, and exhibitions.
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
Classroom Management and Organization
  • Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Manage student behavior and administer discipline according to board policies, administrative regulations and IEPs.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Keep informed and comply with all safety precautions pertaining to music supplies and instruments.
Communication
  • Present positive role model for students, support mission of school district.
  • Establish and maintain open communications by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  • Communicate positively and professionally while serving as an ambassador of the district's Arts programs.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Articulate the district's mission and goals in areas of assigned responsibilities to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
  • Demonstrate awareness of district/community needs and initiate activities to meet identified needs.
  • Demonstrate the use of appropriate and effective techniques for community and parent involvement.
Professional Growth and Development
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Attend professional conferences and workshops annually to consistently grow as a professional in assigned area.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, UIL rules, and board policy in the music area.
Policy, Reports, and Law
  • Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
