Description:
The Department of Urban Education at the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) invites applications for a non-tenure track Emergency Lecturer position in Bilingual and ESL Education starting in Fall 2026. The successful candidate will join a department committed to preparing and developing educators at the undergraduate and graduate levels who provide high-quality, effective educational experiences for emergent bilingual student populations.
We seek applicants who are dedicated to developing skilled educators capable of driving meaningful change in K-12 schools and broader educational contexts. Candidates should bring rigorous, evidence-based approaches to teacher preparation and demonstrate a commitment to serving students, families, and educators in school communities.
Academic responsibilities include teaching and developing undergraduate and/or graduate courses; contributing to program development at both degree levels; involvement in certification exam preparation; field observations; and providing service to the department, college, university, and professional community.
Candidates must hold an advanced degree from an accredited institution in Bilingual/ESL Education or a closely related field, with an academic specialization of at least 18 graduate semester hours in ESL and/or Bilingual Education. Doctoral candidates who are ABD and nearing completion are encouraged to apply.
The standard teaching load for this position is five courses per semester (5/5). Teaching assignments may span multiple modalities (in-person, hybrid, hyflex, and online), day and evening hours, and any of UHD's three campuses. The ideal candidate demonstrates excellence in teaching, models effective instructional practices for linguistically diverse learners, integrates instructional technology, and is willing to collaborate with departmental faculty, school district partners, and community stakeholders.
Familiarity with ESL/Bilingual certification requirements established by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), including relevant certification examination frameworks, is required.
UHD is a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and Minority-Serving Institution (MSI) with a significant population of first-generation, non-traditional, and transfer college students.
Required Qualifications
* Earned master's degree from an accredited institution in Bilingual/ESL Education, or a closely related field with a graduate academic specialization in bilingual and/or ESL education and a minimum of 18 semester hours
* Demonstrated knowledge of historical landmarks decisions, program characteristics and implementation requirements, instructional methods, trends, challenges, legislation, and legal frameworks in bilingual and ESL education
* Demonstrated ability and commitment to teaching adult learners in multilingual, multicultural, and multinational teacher preparation and fieldwork settings
* Minimum of three (3) years of full-time K-12 classroom teaching experience as a Bilingual/ESL educator, preferably in a public-school setting
* Familiarity with ESL/Bilingual certification requirements established by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), including relevant certification examination frameworks
* Ability to teach in different modalities (in-person, hybrid, and virtually (synchronous and asynchronous)
* Willingness to teach in-person at all UHD campuses (Downtown, Northwest, and Kingwood)
Preferred Qualifications
* Earned PhD or EdD in bilingual or ESL education or another closely related field (ABD candidates must complete their work by July 31, 2026)
* Strong background in the biliteracy development of emergent bilingual/ multilingual students
* Experience integrating K-12 relevant fieldwork experience into the preparation of bilingual and ESL educators
* Prior experience in field-based teacher education programs and/or higher education instruction
* Experience developing and/or facilitating professional development for in-service teachers
* Experience with service learning and/or community engagement with multilingual and multicultural communities
