Primary Purpose

Direct and manage the overall program of vocal music for the campus. Provide students an opportunity to participate in extracurricular choir activities and ensure compliance with state, UIL, TMEA, and district requirements. Plan and administer choir activities in accordance with campus and district expectations, helping students achieve district, region, state, and national recognition.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Music from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate
  • Valid music certification
  • Current first aid, CPR, and AED certificate
  • ESL Certification preferred, or required within two (2) years of hiring for teachers hired in 2010‑11
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of curriculum/instruction and overall operation of vocal music program
  • Knowledge of state, UIL, and TMEA policies governing choir activities
  • Ability to manage budget, personnel, and student behavior
  • Ability to instruct students and interpret policy, procedures, and data
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
Experience
  • Minimum of one (1) year of teaching and choir directing experience, preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties

Instructional Strategies

  • Engage with high‑school choir director(s) to align programs, including “feeder” programs.
  • Direct middle‑school vocal performers across beginning classes, large choir ensembles, soloists, and small ensembles.
  • Establish performance requirements and enforce academic eligibility.
  • Support choir participation at extracurricular events, concerts, football games, community events, and all UIL and TMEA activities.
  • Use evaluative findings, including student achievement data, to assess program effectiveness and inform continuous improvement.
  • Recommend policies to improve the program.
  • Maintain and manage inventory of all fixed assets within the department.
  • Oversee cleaning, repair, and storage of all choir equipment and performance apparel.
  • Develop and implement plans for the choral music program and provide written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Prepare lessons that accommodate individual student differences.
  • Present subject matter according to Texas Education Agency guidelines, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect student learning styles and needs.
  • Accompany and supervise on all trips.
  • Actively participate in District choral music events.
  • Coordinate and implement an extracurricular instruction program for participation in District, Region, Area, and All‑State TMEA events.

Student Growth and Development

  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Act as a positive role model, supporting the mission of the school district.
  • Collaborate with intermediate choir directors to promote recruitment/retention and increase enrollment.

Classroom Management and Organization

  • Create an environment conducive to learning, appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Manage student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct, handbook, and choir handbook.
  • Accompany and supervise students on out‑of‑town trips, arranging transportation, lodging, and meals.
  • Take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Communication

  • Establish and maintain open communication through conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  • Maintain professional relationships with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.
  • Promote campus, District, and community awareness of choir activities and performances.
