Job DescriptionRiver Oaks Baptist School is seeking a dynamic and innovative educator to join our team as a long-term Substitute Middle School Counselor beginning in late September through December 2026.
The Middle School counselor has the principal task of collaborating with teachers, parents, and administrators to support students with academic, social/emotional, or behavioral challenges as they become competent and independent learners within the ROBS school environment. This is accomplished through the facilitation of appropriate levels of academic, social/emotional, and behavioral support; development and maintenance of a system to monitor student progress;
and the establishment of an effective communication system among faculty, staff, parents, and students. This position reports to the Head of Middle School.
All Middle School faculty are supported by an experienced divisional team devoted to developing both students and faculty, including Instructional Coaches, Learning Specialists, a Dean of Students, an Assistant Division Head, a Division Head, and the Associate Heads of School for Academics and Student Support. As with all faculty openings, we seek candidates eager to support our mission of preparing students to meet life's challenges and lead tomorrow's world through a superior educational program under girded by faith in Jesus Christ and Christian principles.
Candidates who are currently enrolled in a graduate counseling program and seeking practicum or internship experience are encouraged to apply.
Principal Responsibilities- Work with individual or small groups of students as a short-term intervention.
- Collaborate with grade-level advisors to address wellness of the whole child.
- Provide classroom observations requested by teachers/parents for social/emotional concerns within the classroom setting.
- Provide ongoing collaboration with teachers and parents on educational, social/emotional, or behavioral interventions for students with difficulties.
- Monitor students with challenges during transitions, especially between grade levels.
- Maintain a robust network of local and outside professionals for student/family referrals.
- Serve as the liaison for outside mental health providers.
- Work collaboratively with ROBS faculty and staff, Student Support Team, and outside service providers.
- Participate collaboratively in parent, grade-level, divisional, and all-school team meetings.
- Communicate effectively with parents and colleagues, both verbally and in writing.
- Be a dedicated Christian with an active walk of faith.
- Hold a master’s degree in counseling, school counseling, social work, psychology, or a related field, or be actively enrolled in a graduate program leading to such a degree.
- Have experience working with children or adolescents in a school, counseling, social work, educational, ministry, or related setting.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Have a history of successful collaboration with parents, teachers, administrators, and outside professionals.
- Be receptive to feedback, supervision, and professional growth.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards appropriate to the counseling profession and graduate training programs.
- Possess or be eligible to obtain applicable licensure, certification, or practicum placement requirements as appropriate.
- Have a commitment to supporting the academic, social/emotional, and spiritual development of middle school students.
