Job Description

Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth through the art of playing the piano. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.

Qualifications

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate for music and level assigned
  • ESL Certification preferred or required within two (2) years of employment for teachers hired in 2010-11 school year

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong musical ability, solid knowledge of music theory and piano technique
  • Fluent sight‑reading
  • Ability to explain various piano techniques and musical fundamentals
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
  • Patience and excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to identify strengths and weaknesses

Experience:

  • Student teaching or approved internship
  • Previous experience as a piano teacher preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties

Instructional Strategies

  • Teach music theory and help students sharpen sight‑reading, memorization, and improvisation techniques.
  • Provide high‑quality piano instruction to students of all levels.
  • Prepare students for exams, recitals, concerts, and other events.
  • Motivate students, especially when progress is slow.
  • Provide constructive feedback and guidance to improve technique and musicality.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the district’s curriculum program.
  • Prepare lessons that accommodate differences in student learning styles.
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines of the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and regulations.
  • Plan and use instructional strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that meet individual student needs.
  • Assess student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
  • Cooperate with special education teachers to modify curricula for students with IEPs.
  • Collaborate with staff to plan and implement instructional goals and methods.
  • Plan and supervise teacher aide and volunteer assignments.
  • Use technology to strengthen the learning process.
  • Assist students in improving study methods and habits.
  • Consistently assess achievement through formal and informal assessments and plan instruction accordingly.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities and sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.
  • Demonstrate proficient piano skills in the classroom.
  • Assist in selecting books, equipment, and instructional materials.
  • Participate in district music activities and exhibitions.
  • Demonstrate professional, ethical, and responsible behavior.

Classroom Management and Organization

  • Create a learning environment conducive to development of physical, social, and emotional growth.
  • Foster a positive, encouraging environment that builds confidence and musical appreciation.
  • Manage student behavior and administer discipline per board policies, regulations, and IEPs.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain safety precautions pertaining to piano and music instruments and supplies.

Communication

  • Serve as a positive role model and support the district’s mission.
  • Maintain open communication with parents, students, principals, and colleagues through conferences.
  • Use clear, accurate communication skills to present information.
  • Articulate the district’s mission and goals and solicit community support.
  • Demonstrate awareness of district/community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
  • Employ effective techniques for community and parent involvement.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Participate in staff development to improve job‑related skills.
  • Attend faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Comply with federal and state laws, the Texas Educator’s Code of Ethics, and district policies.

Policy, Reports, and Law

  • Stay informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations for classroom teachers.
