Primary PurposeThe Special Education Co-Teacher is responsible for the instruction of eligible handicapped students as assigned by the Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee within the special education program and curriculum guidelines.
Core Responsibilities- Implement instructional program, utilizing knowledge of learning styles and modalities, correlating IEP with regular education curriculum guides, and requisitioning materials, equipment and supplies needed for implementation.
- Serve as a member of the ARD/IEP Committee, administering criterion-referenced testing, recommending appropriate goals and objectives based on results, and participating in placement decisions based on educational, sociological and physiological data.
- Assist regular school personnel in providing an appropriate educational environment, establishing new objectives based on appraisal findings, redesigning curriculum, suggesting alternative teaching methods, serving as a co-teacher or in-class support for a specific subject area, assessing the relation between student performance and disabling condition, and providing remedial or tutorial assistance.
- Utilize the special education staff, coordinate input to meet the needs of each child, request and coordinate special services of the District as needed, and establish frequent communication and cooperation with families to facilitate necessary environmental and behavioral changes.
- Maintain confidential records, complete end‑of‑year reports, and fulfill campus duties as assigned to other teachers' subjects only to the program needs of the special education child.
- Compile with the position description of the regular classroom teacher as applies to special education students in co‑teach or in‑class support situations, and perform other appropriate duties as assigned by the principal.
Maintain emotional control under stress; frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, moving small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment; may be required to lift or position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint; assist non-ambulatory students; exposure to biological hazards.
QualificationsRequired:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements for assignments.
Preferred:
- Minimum one year of student teaching and approved internship
- Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
- Knowledge of ARD Committee process and IEP goal setting and implementation
- General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
