The librarian's role is to support learning through the provision of instruction, reference, and collection development services to a diverse constituency of students, faculty, staff, and community members. The librarian collaborates with faculty, staff, and administrators to ensure students have access to the resources needed to support the curriculum across multiple modalities. The librarian will be assisting the public via the library’s mission as a Harris County public library.
EssentialJob Functions
- Provides general reference services in a variety of in-person and electronic formats to students and the public
- Provides individualized and class instruction in the use of library resources to support the development of information literacy skills, as well as technology skills for the public
- Develops outreach and co-curricular activities for students, faculty, and community partners, to promote library services and support cross-disciplinary learning outside of the classroom, including outreach to the public in the community
- Serves as liaison to multiple academic departments to provide subject‑tailored information literacy instruction, develop research guides, and assist with collection development
- Assists in maintaining and developing the library’s collection including print, audiovisual and electronic resources
- Evaluates, recommends, introduces, and maintains innovative technology to assist with student learning and success
- Administers ongoing assessments of library services and programs
- Meets institutional service and professional development goals as determined in collaboration with dean/director
- Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned
- Ability to teach information literacy courses at a variety of times and locations in response to institutional needs
- Excellent interpersonal, customer service, oral and written communication skills
- Knowledge and understanding of the importance of information literacy in developing student learning in an academic institution
- Ability to effectively use technology in the performance of the job and in the classroom, including computers, laptops, eBook readers, tablets, pads, and other mobile devices, as well as online and virtual technologies
The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items such as papers, books, or small parts, or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
Work Schedule and Conditions- Equipment used includes PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
- Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
- Work is performed in a climate‑controlled office/library/classroom environment with minimal exposure to safety hazards
- Schedule includes nights and weekends
- Master’s degree in Library Science / Information Science from an ALA‑accredited institution
Commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications. Salary will be determined by related experience and education and will be based on the information in the resume submitted by the applicant.
