Description

Provides information to and advises both enrolled and prospective students regarding the academic programs offered by the University or a specific department, including requirements for admission and retention through graduation; may coordinate the work of entry level academic advisors.

  • Advises enrolled and prospective students regarding academic programs and curriculums.
  • Analyzes and processes degree plans, graduation applications, grade change forms, and general petitions.
  • Maintains student files updated throughout their academic careers and makes changes to records as necessary.
  • Analyzes and processes requests for readmission from academic suspension, as well as financial aid reinstatements; provides retention services for students on probation.
  • May assist in conducting orientation sessions for groups of incoming new students.
  • May assist in recruiting high school and community college students and may make presentations at special events.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
  • The Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Houston is seeking a driven and student-focused Academic Advisor II to support undergraduate and/or graduate students throughout their academic journey. This role is critical in guiding students on degree planning, academic progress, and university policies while contributing to retention, timely graduation, and overall student success. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and comfortable working in a fast-paced academic environment with diverse student populations.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Advise students on degree requirements, course selection, academic policies, and career pathways within the Chemical Engineering program
    • Monitor student academic progress and identify at-risk students; provide interventions and referrals as needed
    • Assist with degree audits, graduation certification, and ensuring compliance with university and departmental requirements
    • Support new student onboarding, including orientation sessions and transition support
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records in university systems (e.g., People Soft or equivalent)
    • Interpret and communicate academic policies, procedures, and curriculum changes clearly to students and faculty
    • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and university departments to support student success initiatives
    • Participate in recruitment, outreach events, and retention programs
    • Provide guidance on internships, co-ops, and academic enrichment opportunities
    • Assist with processing academic petitions, exceptions, and student requests
    • Contribute to continuous improvement of advising processes and student services

    Experience will be considered in lieu of education.

    Education will be considered in lieu of experience.

    MQ:
    Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job-related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed.

    Requires a minimum of three (3) years of directly job-related experience.
