The Special Education Co-Teacher is responsible for the instruction of eligible handicapped students as assigned by the Admission, Review and Dismissal Committee within the special education program and curriculum guidelines.

The Special Education Co-Teacher reports to the Principal and is an exempt position on the Teacher Salary Scale.
The primary purpose of this position is to implement an instructional program, serve as a member of the ARD/IEP Committee, assist regular school personnel in providing an appropriate educational environment for students included in the general education classroom, utilize the special education staff and coordinate input to meet the needs of each special education child, and maintain confidential records of assigned students and complete end-of-year reports and other evaluations.
Qualifications required include a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and a valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements for assignments. Preferred qualifications include a minimum of one-year student teaching and approved internship.
Special knowledge and skills include knowledge of the special needs of students in assigned areas, knowledge of the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation, and general knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
Major responsibilities and duties include implementing an instructional program, serving as a member of the ARD/IEP Committee, assisting regular school personnel in providing an appropriate educational environment for students included in the general education classroom, utilizing the special education staff and coordinating input to meet the needs of each special education child, and maintaining confidential records of assigned students and completing end-of-year reports and other evaluations.
Working conditions include maintaining emotional control under stress, frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling, moving small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment, lifting or positioning students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non-ambulatory students, and exposure to biological hazards.
