Assistant Professor Political Science & Public Administration (Tenure-Track)

The Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Texas Southern University (TSU) invites applications for a full‑time, tenure‑track Assistant Professor of Public Affairs beginning in Fall 2026. We are seeking a dynamic scholar and dedicated educator with expertise in public policy, public administration, and/or public affairs. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses across these areas, maintain an active research agenda, and contribute to the service mission of the university.

  • Teaching (Undergraduate Focus): Teach a 3/3 or 3/4 course load per academic year. Responsibilities include delivering engaging in‑person and/or online courses in undergraduate Political Science (e.g., American Government, Public Policy) and Public Affairs (e.g., Public Administration, Organizational Theory).
  • Curriculum Development: Develop and update undergraduate curriculum to align with current industry trends and academic standards, particularly in emergency management and public administration.
  • Research and Scholarship: Maintain an active research agenda resulting in high‑quality, peer‑reviewed publications in public administration, public affairs, or related policy fields.
  • Student Advising & Mentorship: Provide academic advising to undergraduate students and mentor students pursuing careers in public and non‑profit sectors.

    Collaboration:

    Participate in departmental, college, and university committees. Engage in service to the profession and foster partnerships with community, state, or federal agencies, particularly regarding public sector leadership.

Full‑time equivalent: 1.0.

Hiring Range: $61,568.86–$80,039.00.

Required

Education:

An earned Ph.D. in Public Affairs, Public Administration, Political Science, or a closely related field from an accredited institution. ABD candidates will be considered, but the degree must be conferred by August 15, 2026.

Knowledge: Programs within the department in terms of requirements, policy, procedure, operation, and management; accreditation requirements generally and specifically those that apply to the university. Microsoft Office Professional or similar applications. Evidence of potential for research productivity and publication.

Skills: Leadership, facilitation, and management enrichment that can contribute to the faculty’s overall success at the university. Problem‑solving and decision‑making. Multitasking and time management. Coordinating the work of others. Both verbal and written communication.

Abilities: Handle sensitive, complex, and/or confidential information. Anticipate customer needs and regularly motivate or influence others to deliver customer service excellence. Troubleshoot highly sensitive or confidential issues. Ensure problem resolution. Identify barriers to effective customer service and set customer service standards. Establish a customer feedback system and hold self‑accountable for customer service excellence within the department. Ability to contribute to interdisciplinary initiatives, such as data analytics or public investigations.

Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate courses in public affairs and political science. Ability to maintain the security or integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment or water treatment systems.

Preferred Experience: Experience teaching public administration, public affairs, and/or political science at the college level. Documented evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., student evaluations, peer reviews). Experience in online pedagogy and hybrid course delivery. Practical or professional experience in public service, non‑profit management, and administration, or related fields.
