Description

The Department of Health Systems and Population Health Sciences in the newly established Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine (TJFFCOM) invites applications for a clinical faculty position in the field of medical education. We are recruiting new faculty who have achieved excellence in education, teaching, and research and are prepared to contribute to our bold vision.

This is an open‑rank, clinical non‑tenure track faculty position. This position will be full‑time at 1.0 FTE. Salary and rank commensurate with experience.

This faculty will serve as a course co‑director in the Physician, Patients, and Populations (PPP) Course, which spans 60 pre‑clerkship weeks with 4 hours of weekly instruction. This course is critical to our mission of preparing physicians to deliver primary care in underserved communities with an emphasis on care that is evidence‑based, high‑value, and team‑based. Topics within this course include physician‑patient communication, physical diagnosis, medical interviewing, clinical reasoning and decision‑making, professionalism, medical ethics, population health, health informatics, quality improvement and safety, health systems and policy, interprofessional team‑based care, behavioral health, and evidence‑based medicine.

The faculty position will contribute to activities related to clinical skills, which includes interviewing, physical exam, documentation, and simulation.

They will also serve as a course co‑director in Longitudinal Primary Care (LPC), a model where students are placed in ambulatory clinical settings and provide continuous care to patients alongside a preceptor. This approach aims to foster longitudinal relationships with patients and enhance clinical skills. The successful applicant will play an important role in integrating both PPP and LPC.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Serve as a course co‑director for PPP and LPC.
  • Develop and deliver the PPP course by collaborating with faculty at the college of medicine and university as well as the broader Houston community.
  • Partner with the Center for Clinical Arts, Skills, and Experiential Learning (CCASEL) to develop, deliver, and assess simulation activities.
  • Develop and deliver clinical skills sessions in PPP, including directing and facilitating small‑group learning sessions and other active, applied learning and assessment strategies.
  • Develop and oversee formative and summative assessment of student performance.
  • Assign and submit final grades.
  • Identify, coordinate, and evaluate opportunities for student scholarship and service‑learning opportunities.
  • Conduct ongoing quality assurance and semi‑annual evaluation to assess effectiveness and areas for improvement.
  • Share evaluation outcomes through internal reports, conference presentations, and publications.
  • Identify, orient, develop, and provide feedback to faculty in the course.
  • Recruit, assess, and develop high‑quality LPC preceptors.
  • Assess student performance in LPC.
  • Implement activities that facilitate the application of clinical skills in real‑world settings.
Service Related to TJFFCOM
  • Participate in medical school accreditation activities.
  • Provide constructive feedback to mentees, staff, and students.
  • Contribute to relevant TJFFCOM committees.
  • Foster collaborative and supportive relationships with colleagues and students.
Clinical (Dependent on candidate)
  • Evaluate and treat patients.
  • Maintain accurate electronic medical records.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team‑based care.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Commitment to innovative approaches to education and learning.
  • Ability to succinctly and effectively convey complex ideas through oral and written communication.
  • Medical degree from an allopathic or osteopathic medical college.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Board certification in a primary care specialty.
  • Experience with an electronic health record.
