Position: Part-Time Contract Upper School English Teacher

About ICL Academy
: A new model of private online education focused on connecting academics, student passions, and industry experts. ICL Academy is an online private school for grades 5-12 that emphasizes student engagement through a personalized, blended approach combining academics with personal passions. The founder, Kirk Spahn, is a fourth-generation educator with over 20 years in digital education and youth civic engagement. ICL Academy partners with industry experts who serve as master teachers and Champion Mentors, and is supported by a history of academic excellence through the Institute for Civic Leadership.

ICL Academy seeks talented, experienced teachers to support the mission to inspire champions for life—students who excel in their education, communities, and passions through leadership, character, and purpose. Teachers deliver a synchronous and asynchronous academic program requiring live seminars, effective grading and feedback, live office hours, and timely communication with staff, faculty, students, and families.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain an instructional role in the teacher’s content area, utilizing ICL Academy’s learning management system, student information system, curriculum, and supporting technologies.
  • Support students with a wide range of passions, strengths, interests, and needs.
  • Conduct the school’s synchronous (weekly live seminar) and asynchronous learning programs.
  • Prepare and teach engaging weekly live seminars in the teacher’s content area.
  • Create an inclusive, supportive, and engaging learning environment.
  • Encourage student participation and peer-to-peer interaction in live seminars.
  • Ensure learning objectives are met in live seminars.
  • Carry out administrative tasks related to teaching as determined by the Academic Department Chair, Director of Curriculum, or Head of School.
  • Uphold the school’s academic integrity policy and communicate violations as necessary.
  • Participate in an annual teacher observation process as required by leadership.
Grading and Feedback
  • Provide timely (within 5 business days), accurate, personalized, and high-quality grading and feedback.
  • Maintain an up-to-date gradebook within the LMS.
  • Utilize the school’s AI grading platform, Busy Bee, to support quality feedback.
  • Ensure timely grading and feedback during course extension periods each semester.
Office Hours
  • Host four 1-hour live office-hour sessions per week during the academic year to address student questions and learning needs.
Communication
  • Respond promptly (within 24 hours) to student and family emails and calls in a professional manner.
  • Share important student updates with the academic advising team and other academic staff as needed.
  • Collaborate with the academic team to support student success.
  • Communicate curricular errors or improvements to the Academic Department Chair and/or the Director of Curriculum.
Meeting Attendance
  • Attend monthly faculty or department meetings as determined by leadership.
  • Attend beginning-of-term faculty orientations in August and January.
  • Attend additional required meetings or orientations as needed.
Job Requirements , Skills, and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Master’s degree in teaching, curriculum design, and/or related area preferred.
  • Content expertise in the relevant academic area (English, math, science, social studies, world languages, or electives) required.
  • Active state teaching certification preferred.
  • Teaching and/or tutoring experience in a virtual setting preferred.
  • Experience supporting highly motivated/specialized students.
  • Ability to engage virtual students with interactive and creative lessons and discussions.
  • Technologically proficient in student information systems and learning management systems.
  • Highly organized with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment and operate with ethics and integrity.
  • High degree of flexibility and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
