ProgramThe Upward Bound program recruits H.I.S.D. students from the 9th and 10th grades to aid and encourage them to successfully complete high school, enroll in a post‑secondary institution and graduate. Approximately 80% of Upward Bound students have successfully completed high school and enrolled in post‑secondary education.
Work DescriptionIn addition to teaching your subject, you will advise students on academic and career issues, assist with registration, orientation and assessment as needed. You will demonstrate sensitivity toward students from diverse backgrounds, including students with disabilities, and continually seek innovative instructional methodologies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Teach Upward Bound students in the assigned subject area.
- Develop and implement curriculum, including traditional, audio‑visual and computer‑assisted instruction.
- Maintain daily attendance records and evaluate student progress per semester.
- Prepare weekly lesson plans and create a positive learning environment.
- Inform the Project Director of any problems that might hinder student success or participation.
- Serve as a role model and mentor for Upward Bound students.
- Prepare incident reports as required and maintain classroom discipline.
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings and may be asked to chaperone field trips.
- Education
:
Bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Science, Education or a related field. - Experience
: 1 to 2 years of teaching and/or counseling of high school students in the appropriate subject area; three years preferred. - Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
:- Ability to motivate and relate to disadvantaged students.
- Strong communication with parents/guardians, school personnel and community organizations.
- Knowledge of academic support and developmental services.
- Demonstrated ability to work with the targeted population.
- PC and basic software proficiency.
