Special Education Teacher Assistant

Reports To: Building Principal

Classification: Paraprofessional (Clerical/Teacher Assistant)

Wage/Hour Status: Non-exempt

Days per year: 188

Salary: See Compensation Plan for Paraprofessional/Administrative Support Staff, Pay Grade 202

Primary Purpose

Assist students and teachers in the special education classes.

Qualifications and Skills
  • Minimum of 48 college hours or high school diploma/equivalent plus pass a District Assessment.
  • Educational Aide Certification.
  • Ability to work with children using appropriate interpersonal skills.
  • Background related to working with children and parents.
  • Physical capacity to lift, transfer and assist students with physical disabilities (e.g., ability to lift 50 lbs).
  • Bus driver training as needed, or as required.
  • Fluency in English (verbal and written).
Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Adhere to Texas Education Agency and district policies and procedures.
  • Assist in carrying out the instructional program under the supervision of the teaching personnel.
  • Assist in preparation, use and maintenance of instructional materials and equipment.
  • Assist with teacher planned activities, exercises and drills.
  • Follow teacher instruction and guidance.
  • Maintain student records and audit folders.
  • Assist in helping students with self-care activities, such as feeding and toileting needs (required).
  • Participate in planned in-service and professional growth activities.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Working Conditions
  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Work with frequent interruptions.
  • Regular in-person interaction with the public.
  • Repetitive hand motions, prolonged computer use, frequent sitting, stooping, bending, pushing and pulling.
  • Move small stacks of textbooks, boxes, equipment and other campus equipment.
  • May require occasional extended hours.
Equipment Used

Wheelchair, ramp, computer, and various office equipment.
