Summary

Provide the expertise and knowledge that support the high school curriculum. Establish courses following accepted secondary education standards and teach students using a variety of effective methodologies, providing engagement and support activities that encourage learning. The role of the Instructional Faculty encompasses teaching, learning, academic advising, and professional development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching

  • Plan and teach a program of study in accordance with the Texas Education Agency and HCCS guidelines.
  • Demonstrate and apply skill and/or knowledge in effective classroom management techniques.
  • Continuously improve the quality of instruction by reviewing student achievement and implementing innovative methodologies, techniques, and delivery methods.
  • Develop and use a syllabus for each course within college, discipline, and departmental guidelines and submit one copy to the Director, AHS.
  • Plan, develop, and implement a variety of instructional methods and materials to assist students in learning and mastering course objectives.
  • Provide appropriate instruction for students with differing learning styles and educational and experiential backgrounds.
  • Evaluate students to measure their progress toward course objectives.
  • Inform students and parents of their progress in a timely manner.
  • Keep accurate student records and submit related reports and forms within requested timelines.
  • Teach courses at a variety of times and locations in response to institutional needs.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning.

Professional Development

  • Keep pace with developments in classroom management techniques and student behavior.
  • Learn and apply technologies that support student learning.
  • Participate in the evaluation process for self, department, and college.
  • Be familiar with and adhere to all policies and procedures of HCCS.
Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above.

Education
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university required.
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements for subject and level area assigned. For English/ELA teaching assignments, ESL certification preferred. Physical Education teachers must hold a current automated external defibrillator (AED) certificate.
Experience
  • Three (3) years of teaching experience required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Willing and able to teach day or evening classes at a number of sites around the city.
  • Knowledge and skill in a variety of computer usage and software required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse professional, community, and student population.
  • Utilize good organizational and planning skills.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to students with diverse academic, socio‑economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and to students with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate students in a learning‑centered environment.
  • Self‑disciplined and able to effectively manage oneself.
