Position Summary

Assist with advising, coaching, and support for Rice first‑generation/limited‑income (FGLI) undergraduate students. Uses a proactive, relationship‑centered advising model to guide students in the transition to college and achieving their goals at Rice and beyond. Engages students, connects them with resources, and facilitates retention.

Ideal Candidate Statement

Candidate should have a proven track record of advising high‑need undergraduates during their transition to college; strong communication, rapport building, problem solving, and an individual contributor mindset.

Workplace Requirements

Monday‑Friday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; occasional evenings and weekends during busy periods.

Workplace Location

Hybrid: four days on campus, one remote day per week. Work arrangements may change per Rice policy 440.

Hiring Range

Full‑time, benefits‑eligible. Salary: $60,000 – $65,000 annually.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 2+ years professional experience in a four‑year college/university setting, including advising or coaching
Skills
  • Coaching and instructional skills, organizational ability, attention to detail, ability to assess effectiveness of interventions
  • Knowledge of student development theories and application in practice
  • Problem‑solving and crisis support for students
  • Strong communication, rapport‑building, collaboration with faculty, staff, students, alumni, families, administration
  • Experience working with diverse populations, including first‑generation, limited‑income, and underrepresented students
Preferences
  • Master's degree (preferably in college student personnel, counseling, student affairs, or related field)
  • Experience with holistic, proactive/intrusive advising strategies
  • Experience providing academic support, leadership development, program development
  • Experience in student success and retention initiatives
  • Experience collaborating with faculty
  • Experience at a highly selective institution
  • Familiarity with fast‑paced, results‑oriented environments
  • Team‑oriented collaboration
Essential Functions
  • Identify and advise FGLI students needing additional support, provide individualized coaching for academic, social, leadership, interpersonal development
  • Assist students in developing roadmaps for success using varied strategies
  • Monitor academic performance, update advising platform, prepare reports, maintain files
  • Implement best practices in proactive advising, coaching, higher‑education landscape
  • Develop student success interventions, workshops, and programs for college transition
  • Teach a section of University 110, first‑year transition course
  • Perform all other duties as assigned
  • Occasional weekend and evening work required
Additional Functions
  • Communicate and collaborate with residential college magisters, wellbeing, faculty, academic departments, campus life entities, and resources to ensure comprehensive support
  • Support other initiatives related to FGLI student support, including orientation week, marketing initiatives, programming for first‑generation/limited‑income students
