Job Description

Seeking independent contractors: AIS is seeking certified Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs) in the Houston, Texas area to join our team of independent contractors. TVIs are itinerant and provide in-person services to students with visual impairments and blindness in local school divisions. This is a full-time onsite position.

The TVIs serve as members of a student’s educational team, providing comprehensive assessments and services to school-aged students. The TVI assists in developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with visual impairments. The candidate must possess a working knowledge of assessments and instructional practices, evidence-based research, recommended best practices, technologies available for low- and high-tech AT, and the expected roles and responsibilities of a TVI within a school environment.

Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive assessments and services to school-aged students with visual impairments or blindness.
  • Assist in developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for these students.
  • Conduct and write FVALMA assessments and recommendations.
  • Consult and train teachers and service providers about visual impairments.
  • Collaborate with parents, co-workers, school staff, and service providers.
Qualifications
  • Must hold a Professional License in visual impairment.
  • Preferred work-related experience as a TVI.
  • Considerable knowledge of special education regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Experience writing and implementing IEPs and 504 plans.
  • Experience conducting and writing FVALMA assessments and recommendations.
  • Working knowledge of Braille and low-vision skills.
  • Strong human relations, interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, organizational, and planning skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the characteristics of individuals with a variety of disabilities, especially visual impairments.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to individual student differences.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative and cooperative manner.
