Primary PurposeResponsible for the instructional program and guidance of students identified as needing special education services.
Qualifications / Skills- Education / Certification: Bachelor’s degree in a related field;
Valid Texas Teacher Certificate or out‑of‑state teaching certificate appropriate for the position; ESL Certification required during first year if not already obtained;
Certification must meet federal and state requirements. - Special Knowledge /
Skills:
Knowledge of structured teaching strategies for students with Autism; extensive knowledge of effective instructional practices for students with severe cognitive and other developmental disabilities; proficiency in developing and implementing effective behavior intervention plans for students with moderate to severe behavior concerns; proficiency in collecting data to establish strengths, needs, and goals for instruction; physical capacity to lift, transfer, and assist students with physical disabilities (e.g., lift 50 lbs);
trained in de‑escalation and restraint techniques; excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; proficiency in effective use of technology; ability to work effectively with both adults and children.
- Adhere to district philosophy, develop and implement lesson plans that meet curriculum requirements and provide written evidence of preparation.
- Prepare lessons that accommodate differences in student learning styles and present subject matter per Texas Education Agency guidelines, board policies, and administrative regulations.
- Participate in the identification and evaluation of learner competencies.
- Recommend appropriate goals and objectives for learner needs.
- Develop and write students’ IEPs.
- Follow specific instructional objectives based on the student’s learning style.
- Implement new methodologies, philosophies, and innovations.
- Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits; conduct ongoing assessment of achievement through formal and informal testing.
- Serve as a positive role model and support the mission of the district.
- Assist students with physical disabilities.
- Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for physical, social, and emotional development.
- Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and handbook.
- Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities; assist in selecting instructional materials.
- Attend required meetings and complete required reports.
- Maintain open communication through conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers; uphold professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
- Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
- Collaborate with others to meet learner needs.
- Consult with parents and appropriate school personnel regarding each student’s intellectual, academic, social, emotional, and physical development.
- Participate in staff development activities to improve job‑related skills.
- Keep informed about state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
- Compile, maintain, and file all required reports, records, and documents.
- Attend faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions; position requires regular in‑person interaction with the public.
- Physical Demands: Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing; move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment; lift, transfer, and assist students with physical disabilities (e.g., lift 50 lbs).
