Job Purpose:

Under supervision of the Director of Programs, the Special Education Teacher assists in planning and implementing of The H.E.A.R.T. Program curriculum to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and supports each participant's individual vocational training goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Conducts vocational life-skills training and implements curriculum for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Assists with development and preparation of The H.E.A.R.T. Program training materials.

Tracks participation and administers pre and post-test evaluations.

Prepares monthly, quarterly and annual reports as required.

Maintains all audio/visual equipment and educational materials.

Demonstrates sensitivity to and respect for adults with developmental disabilities.

Performs diversified job duties to support participants in their employment and training situations.

Works as part of the H.E.A.R.T. team to assist participants in identifying and making choices about their social, vocational, and behavioral goals.

Trains participants to perform their essential work tasks in an appropriate and productive manner, specific to the workplace.

Provides on-going support, as needed, to insure enhanced job performance and satisfaction.

Ensures that employer's production, cleanliness and quality control needs are met. This may require the Special Education Teacher to complete actual work tasks, as appropriate.

Utilizes approved behavioral management techniques to improve a participant's ability to be included in community work settings.

Provides supervision and assistance to participants to ensure their safety and well-being.

Participates in a supervisory role during scheduled concession events and outdoor events.

Provides safe transportation in company-owned vehicle as needed.

Represents the agency in a positive manner to the public and agency stakeholders.

Provides transportation services as needed for the program.

Other duties as assigned to accomplish organizational goals.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form.
Ability to observe client behavior, relate it to task being performed and make recommendations for change or modification if necessary.
Ability to assist participants with appropriate social behavior to facilitate integration and inclusion.
Ability to act as an advocate for participants.
Ability to manage multiple goals and objectives simultaneously.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.

The Special Education Teacher may:

Work in outside weather conditions.
Drive company-owned vehicles in various weather conditions.
Be occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, cold, and heat.
Be working in a commercial kitchen environment.
Be working in a warehouse environment.

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.

Must have a current State Certification in Special Education.

Must be able to successfully pass a driving records check, a background check, and a pre-employment alcohol and controlled substances screening.

Be able to gather numerical and narrative data to assist in the completion and/or composition of reports.

Be able to use judgment in the completion/implementation of assigned program responsibilities.

Must be able to effectively communicate with parents, staff and agency management.

Must be available some evenings, weekends and holidays for vending and concession events or as needed to accomplish program goals.

Must be able to bend and lift up to 25 lbs consistently.

Must be able to stand on feet for long periods.
