Piano Teacher @ Miller Intermediate Performing and Visual Arts Academy
Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth through the art of playing the piano. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.
QualificationsEducation/Certification:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
- Valid Texas teaching certificate for music and level assigned
- ESL Certification preferred or ESL Certification required within two (2) years of employment beginning with teachers hired in 2010-11 school year
Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Strong musical ability, as well as a strong knowledge of music theory and piano technique
- Fluent sight-reading
- Ability to explain various piano techniques and musical fundamentals
- Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
- Patience and excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to identify strengths and weaknesses
Experience:
- Student teaching or approved internship
- Previous experience as a piano teacher preferred
Instructional Strategies
- Teach music theory and help students sharpen their sight-reading, memorization, and improvising techniques.
- Provide high-quality piano instruction to students of all levels.
- Prepare students for exams, recitals, concerts, and other events.
- Motivate students, especially when they are struggling and progress is slow.
- Provide constructive feedback and guidance to help students improve their technique and musicality.
- Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of district's curriculum program.
- Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles.
- Present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
- Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect accommodation for individual needs of students assigned.
- Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
- Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
- Cooperate with other members of staff for planning and implementing instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
- Plan and supervise purposeful assignments of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s).
- Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
- Assist students in analyzing and improving study methods and habits.
- Consistently assess student achievement through formal and informal assessments and use results to plan instructional activities.
- Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.
- Demonstrate proficient piano skills within the classroom setting.
- Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
- Participate in district defined music activities and exhibitions.
- Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
Classroom Management and Organization
- Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
- Foster a positive, encouraging learning environment that builds confidence and musical appreciation.
- Manage student behavior and administer discipline according to board policies, administrative regulations and IEPs.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Keep informed and comply with all safety precautions pertaining to piano and music supplies and instruments.
Communication
- Present positive role model for students, support mission of school district.
- Establish and maintain open communications by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
- Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
- Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
- Articulate the district's mission and goals in areas of assigned responsibilities to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
- Demonstrate awareness of district/community needs and initiate activities to meet identified needs.
- Demonstrate the use of appropriate and effective techniques for community and parent involvement.
Professional Growth and Development
- Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
- Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, UIL rules, and board policy in the music area.
