Secondary ESL Department Chair @ Alief Middle School

Primary

Purpose:

Coordinate the campus ESL program including registration, instruction, assessment, training, and compliance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from a recognized, accredited college or university
  • Valid educator certification and highly qualified status for the position advertised
  • ESL Certification

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • English proficiency (oral and literacy skills);
    Bilingual preferred
  • Trained in ELPS, TELPAS and Sheltered Instruction and secondary applicants must be SIOP trained, T-TESS:
    Proficient
  • Knowledge & understanding of Language Development and Best Practices for instructing Emergent Bilingual (EBs)
  • Knowledge & understanding of the district's Dual Language Program (middle school) and the ESL program
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office including Word, Cambium, Excel & presentation platform
  • Knowledge and ability to use a Learning Management System

Experience:

  • Minimum three (3) years of classroom teaching experience as a teacher of EBs
  • Multiple grade level experience preferred
Program Management
  • Lead and oversee campus ESL Programs.
  • Assist in grouping students and assigning them with the appropriate teacher for ESL, Reading/Language Arts, and content instruction.
  • Serve as an instructional leader for teachers of EBs with planning, modeling, and implementing ESL classes and sheltered instruction.
  • Collect and analyze data to improve EB instruction and monitor campus program.
  • Collaborate with content specialist to serve as an instructional coach for ESL teachers.
  • Monitor progress of campus EBs.
  • Partner with District Multilingual Programs specialist to align district and campus goals.
  • Coordinate and implement registration process for EBs.
  • Coordinate and lead campus LPAC meetings and discussion ensuring advocacy for EB students regarding interventions, placement, and grouping.
  • Coordinate and implement required TELPAS assessments for EBs.
  • Provide testing and retesting decision for STAAR/EOC assessments.
  • Work cooperatively with campus leaders to meet the needs of EB students.
  • Train, coach and oversee ESL Compliance Paraprofessional for maintenance of LEP folders, completion of compliance paperwork, and LEP data entry.
  • Provide campus professional development as directed by principal and district in order to address the needs of EB students.
  • Attend district ESL meetings.
  • Attend ARD meetings of EBs participating in Special Education.
  • Attend district professional development trainings for ESL leaders.
  • Directly supports instruction at least 50% of the time (fall only). Conduct a minimum of 4-8 SIOP classroom walk-throughs per week (fall only)
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required.
  • Monitor and maintain ESL Certification records for all campus staff.
  • Share SIOP implementation progress monitoring data within campus ILT meetings.
  • Partner with campus content specialists to embed SIOP strategies across content plannings to meet needs of all EB students including long term EB students in general education classes.

Other:

  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
  • Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
