The primary job functions of a faculty member are teaching and instruction. Faculty members are expected to demonstrate success in these areas: service to the school, professional growth and development, and academic advisement. Teaching assignments are given on a semester-to-semester basis for dates and times as scheduled through the course catalogue, created by the Junior School administrative staff and leadership.

Essential Functions:

• Teach courses as assigned each semester.
• Meet classes as scheduled at the designated time and place for the designated length of time.
• Maintain an efficient and orderly classroom.
• Oversee the safe and proper use of equipment and materials.
• Maintain behavior standards in the classroom.
• Supervise students for the duration of each assigned class, as well as outside of the classroom as appropriate.
• Develop new courses and material as appropriate, in conjunction with the Junior School administrative leadership.
• Attend faculty meetings.
• Stay current in teaching disciplines.
• Submit lesson plans, attendance forms and other documentation as required by the administrative team by the assigned deadlines.
• Stay current, informed and in compliance with the policies, guidelines and health & safety practices of the Glassell Junior School and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Success can be defined as follows:

Service to the school:
Serving on scholarship juries; attendance at exhibition openings; attendance at faculty meetings; attendance at departmental meetings; development of new course materials or adaptation of existing course materials.

Professional Growth & Development:
Participating in solo and group exhibitions at private galleries, museums, non-profit organizations and alternative art spaces; participating in local, regional, national and international professional organizations related to artistic practices; staying current in media techniques within artistic disciplines.

Academic Advisement:
Participating in judging scholarship portfolios and sketches; completing and submitting student evaluations for scholarship renewal; keeping school administration informed of status changes regarding scholarship students in attendance.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Skills, knowledge and training in appropriate media for course structures (i.e. Ceramics instructors should have previous training, knowledge and skills in Ceramics, 3D and/or sculpture)
• Ability to engage students in active learning of discipline
• Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral forms
• Ability to adapt instruction to enhance student learning, including appropriate use of traditional, technology-assisted, hands-on, and other forms of instruction
• Knowledge of academic culture, policies and procedures
• Previous teaching experience preferred.

Education and Experience:

• B.A. or B.F.A. in arts, education, or humanities (commensurate experience in teaching and professional development may be substituted with administrative approval)
• Applicants must have demonstrated knowledge of artistic processes, mediums, and techniques
• Previous teaching experience in related field
• Experience teaching children ages 4-18 strongly preferred
