Role Description

The TDCJ Automotive Instructor is a full-time, on-site role based at the J3 Unit, responsible for delivering high-quality automotive instruction to students within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) program. The instructor plans and teaches courses in automotive technology and repair, using a structured curriculum aligned with industry standards and college requirements. Day-to-day responsibilities include preparing lesson plans, conducting classroom and hands-on lab instruction, assessing student progress, and maintaining accurate records of attendance, grades, and competencies.

The role also involves maintaining a safe and organized instructional environment, coordinating with college and TDCJ staff, and supporting student readiness for entry-level employment or advanced training in the automotive field. The instructor is expected to uphold Alvin College’s commitment to equity, professionalism, and student success.

Qualifications
  • Candidates should possess strong skills in Automotive Technology and Automotive Repair, including diagnostics, maintenance, and safety practices
  • Candidates should possess general Automotive industry knowledge, including current tools, equipment, and standards.
  • Relevant certifications (such as ASE) and/or a postsecondary credential in automotive technology or a related field are beneficial.
  • Previous teaching or training experience, especially in career and technical education or correctional education, is preferred.
  • Strong communication, classroom management, and student mentorship skills are important.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with college personnel and TDCJ staff and to follow institutional and facility policies and procedures.
