Purpose:

To provide opportunities for the teacher to attend to the individual needs of students. Assist staff with students at-risk of academic failure or dropping out of school.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Qualifies for appropriate state paraprofessional certification

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

  • Demonstrated interest in and aptitude for work to be performed
  • Computer skills preferred
  • Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multi-task activities

Responsibilities and Duties:

One of the primary purposes of this position is to assist in carrying out the district’s goal of improving student achievement by providing assistance to students who are at-risk of academic failure or dropping out of school and/or staff who work with students at-risk of academic failure or dropping out of school.

Program Support
  • Assist in carrying out the district’s goal of improving student achievement by providing assistance to students who are at-risk of academic failure or dropping out of school and/or staff who work with these students.
  • Check and record student attendance.
  • Reproduce instructional materials.
  • Type forms and instructional materials.
  • Distribute and collect materials for instruction.
  • Administer, score and record achievement and diagnostic tests, score objective-type teacher-made tests and quizzes, and record grades as the teacher recommends for students.
  • Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills taught by the teacher.
  • Catalogue and file instructional materials and maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment and prepare orders or requisitions for needed materials.
  • Read to students, listen to students read, and participate in other forms of oral communication with students.
  • Help students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by teachers.
  • Keep bulletin boards and other classroom displays up-to-date.
  • Operate equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
  • Assist students in the library or media center.
  • Assist with the supervision of students during lunch periods, assemblies, play periods, and transitions.
  • Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information as is expected of teachers.
  • Participate in in-service training programs as assigned.
  • Support students’ development of self-care skills appropriate for their age including toilet training, diaper changing and tooth brushing.

  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
  • Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of Instructional Paraprofessional Personnel.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

Posture: Prolonged standing & sitting, occasional kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching; may also require climbing stairs and reaching over head

Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (up to 15 pounds);
May require occasional heavy lifting and carrying (15-45 pounds)

Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; possible district wide travel; all campuses are temperature controlled with hard surface floors

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
