Professor and Department Chair of Computational Applied Mathematics and Operations Research at Rice University
Rice University invites applications and nominations for a tenured Professor to serve as the Department Chair of CMOR, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027. The candidate will lead the department through a period of strategic growth and interdisciplinary innovation.
The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a world‑class research program with a history of extramural funding, demonstrate excellence in undergraduate and graduate instruction, and provide transformative leadership to the department, the school, and the broader university community.
About the CMOR Department:
The department has world‑class expertise in continuous optimization, numerical linear algebra, partial differential equations, inverse problems, and large‑scale stochastic systems. Faculty apply these strengths to critical fields including energy systems, medical imaging, neuroengineering, and climate modeling.
Faculty & staff:
The department consists of 14 core faculty (12 tenured/tenure‑track, 2 full‑time teaching) and is supported by five dedicated administrative staff members.
Students: CMOR serves approximately 75 undergraduate majors and 65 doctoral and professional graduate students.
- B.A. and B.S. in Operations Research and Computational and Applied Mathematics.
- Minors in Computational and Applied Mathematics and Operations Research.
- Master of Computational & Applied Mathematics (MCAAM). (Non-Thesis)
- Master of Industrial Engineering (MIE). (Non-Thesis)
- Master of Computational Science and Engineering (MCSE) (in coordination with the Department of Statistics).
- Ph.D. in Computational and Applied Mathematics and Operations Research.
All candidates must have earned a Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics, operations research, or a related field and possess professional experience consistent with the rank of the position. All applicants should demonstrate excellence in scholarship, teaching, and collegial service.
