Job Summary

The IC&E/Combustion Turbine Technician is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all instruments, controls, and electrical systems at the plant, ensuring safe, reliable, efficient, and environmentally compliant operations. The position will be filled as a Combustion Turbine Tech I or II based on experience.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities
  • Start up, operate, and shut down mechanical and electrical equipment, including distributed control systems, to meet operational goals.
  • Maintain high safety standards and environmental compliance, including hazardous materials handling and adherence to OSHA regulations.
  • Conduct routine and preventive maintenance, troubleshoot equipment issues, and support electrical switching up to 230 kV.
  • Assist in training, procedure development, contractor oversight, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Proficiently use SAP for maintenance and inventory, interpret technical data, and communicate effectively with internal teams and external partners (CAISO, SCE, AEP, CenterPoint, TCEQ, TexasRE, & ERCOT).
  • Perform dual roles as the Control Room Operator and Outside Operator while working with other assigned personnel in all shift activities, including operation, maintenance, and performance monitoring of all equipment; testing and treatment of plant water; creation and maintenance of plant records; extensive use of personal computers and distributed control systems.
  • Perform switching of electrical equipment up to 230 kV.
  • Perform other assigned independent, team, or shift activities such as industrial safety program activities, routine maintenance tasks, housekeeping, general facility preservation, and any other activity directed.
Working Conditions

Power Plant Environment – work both inside and outside in all temperatures and climate conditions in accordance with Heat Stress procedures. Conditions include large rotating equipment, energized electrical equipment in high noise areas, confined spaces, elevations over 250 feet, or platforms at heights of 5 feet or greater. Activities may involve climbing stairways, ladders, and working from aerial devices.

Minimum Requirements
  • Combustion Turbine Tech I:
    High School diploma or GED and 2 years of related power plant experience OR Associate’s degree in Instrumentation or related field and 0 years of related power plant experience.
  • Valid State Driver’s License.
  • Recommended rating on the NRG pre‑employment assessment test.
  • Combustion Turbine Tech II:
    High School diploma or GED and 3 years of related power plant experience OR Associate’s degree in Instrumentation or related field and 2 years of related industrial/process experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in instrumentation systems, preferably PLC, ABB, and Bailey DCS or comparable industry.
  • Associate’s degree in Instrumentation or related field with at least 1 year of related power plant experience.
Additional Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Skilled in reading and interpreting logic diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals; experienced with DCS, PLCs, and plant monitoring systems.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to make sound decisions independently in high‑pressure situations.
  • Knowledgeable in Lockout/Tagout procedures, emergency protocols, and plant safety standards.
  • Effective communicator with strong interpersonal skills; able to lead, collaborate, and influence others in a team environment.
  • Capable of multitasking, performing calculations, and learning complex mechanical and electrical systems with minimal supervision; detailed knowledge of power plant IC&E systems including instrumentation, controls, and electrical skills.
Physical Requirements (Demand and Frequency)
  • Prepared to work irregular or rotating shifts and respond to emergency callout 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
  • Can work in mentally stressful environments and react to crises requiring immediate action.
  • Must perform tasks involving walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, shoveling, climbing, and using hand tools up to 25 pounds in positions above or below the head, and extended reach for repairs.
