Overview

Provides 24/7 line power plant engineering technical support for the United Airlines worldwide fleet of aircraft. Includes all repair and modification issues for all engine models in UAL’s fleet. Investigates maintenance problems during maintenance and initiates corrective actions to return aircraft to service in a timely manner. Provides engineering assistance to maintenance and maintenance control consisting of technical data research, process development, and procedure clarification and direction necessary to maintain continued airworthiness of the aircraft.

Position requires shift, weekend and some holidays’ work. Travel may be needed to support out of service conditions. Periodic training will be necessary. Must be flexible in work hours, including overtime, and is expected to be a self‑starter who quickly assimilates with the team and can contribute immediately.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support for line maintenance aircraft to ensure safe and timely return to service. This can include designing and developing technical data for repairs and modifications.
  • Provide and receive technical guidance to and from other engineers.
  • Develop substantiating data for aircraft and equipment design/repairs through knowledge of aircraft operational characteristics, materials and processes.
  • Responsible for investigation, root cause analysis for chronic aircraft issues. Coordinates extensively with other United Airlines operational groups to ensure airworthiness, safety, regulatory compliance, warranty liaison, operational reliability and efficiency.
  • Interfaces with industry, regulatory and/or governmental agencies to establish policies and procedures as required.
  • May be required to address an AD (Airworthiness Directive) and write emergency engineering documentation. Other emergency industry documents may also apply.
  • Must have good customer service skills.
  • Must work closely with Powerplant Engineering group to ensure optimal program management.
  • May be required to periodically update technical source documents as applicable to insure accuracy.
  • May be required to periodically help others perform their duties.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
Knowledge/Skills
  • Familiarity with engine systems and components preferred.
  • Technical expertise in aircraft power plant trend review and analysis preferred.
  • Knowledge of FARS (especially 145, 25 and 121) preferred.
  • Line and base maintenance class for CFM
    56‑7B, V2500, CF6‑80C2, GE90, GEnx, RB211, PW2000, &/or PW4000 preferred.
  • GE’s – Powerplant Engineering for Commercial Engines preferred.
  • Other power plant industry class experience is preferred.
  • Teamwork, project management, good communication and analytical skills required.
  • Technical writing ability preferred.
  • SCEPTRE experience preferred.
  • The ability to recognize the urgency of the situation and react accordingly.
  • The ability to prioritize multiple situations and work on them in the order that will best benefit United Airlines.
  • Microsoft Excel / Word / PowerPoint general usage.
  • Results oriented.
  • Ability to read, understand and translate ICA (Instructions for Continued Airworthiness) documents.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with all departments and employees.
  • Self‑motivated, strong planning, organizational and time‑management skills.
Experience
  • AOG recovery experience preferred.
  • Recent line engineering experience on Boeing aircraft including A319/320, 737, 757, 767, 777 and/or 787 preferred.
  • Powerplant engineering project, trend analysis, shop experience preferred.
  • Experience with aircraft propulsion and ECM (Engine Condition Monitoring) systems preferred.
  • Engine test, design, overhaul and/or repair engineering experience or equivalent experience preferred.
