Job Description

The Houston District of the Texas Department of Transportation is looking for a dedicated professional to take on the vital role of Safety Officer. This dynamic position plays a key role in shaping and maintaining the district’s safety culture. The successful candidate will support the implementation of TxDOT’s safety program across a six‑county region, helping to ensure safe practices throughout all operational areas.

Minimum Salary: $42,976.00
Maximum Salary: $76,028.00

Safety Officer I Responsibilities
  • Assist in performing industrial hygiene testing of functional operations to ensure compliance with safety and/or hazardous materials regulations and minimize employee health risks/exposures.
  • Coordinate safety meetings; usually involves planning, conducting, coordinating schedules and providing literature and audio‑visual material.
  • Inspect equipment and work areas.
  • Investigate employee accidents, prepare reports and maintain records; identify injury types and accident causes, recommend preventative actions and conduct follow‑up investigations.
  • Monitor workers’ compensation records.
  • Plan, schedule and assist with administering training on safety issues including defensive driving, CPR, first‑aid, fleet safety and hazardous materials; maintain applicable training records.
  • Plan, schedule and monitor programs or activities that promote employee safety and accident prevention.
  • Provide safety information for bulletin boards and employees.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Safety Officer II Responsibilities
  • All essential duties listed above.
  • Administer the new employee driver’s orientation program and the vehicle safety program.
  • Assist or serve as the Substance Control Officer.
  • Coordinate and schedule employee safety awards and the annual Safety Awards Banquet/Truck Roadeo.
  • Process damage property claims and/or assist with tort claims and open records requests.
Minimum Qualifications Safety Officer I
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Safety, Industrial Technology, Business Administration or related discipline. Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year‑per‑year basis.

    Certifications:

    Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Safety Officer II
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Safety, Industrial Technology, Business Administration or related discipline. Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year‑per‑year basis.
  • Work Experience: 1 year occupational safety, industrial hygiene or related work areas. (Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent).

    Certifications:

    Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Additional Competencies (Both Levels)
  • Some knowledge of applicable governmental laws, rules and regulations specific to area of responsibility for safeguarding information and information technology related systems.
