Job Overview

This position is a great opportunity for a candidate to expand their knowledge in Traffic Systems Management. The position duties will cover traffic signal timing, engineering, and consultant contracts management. The employee will be exposed to Timing Design, Adaptive Systems, Automated Traffic Performance Measures (ATSPM) and Connected Vehicle Systems. In addition to working with consultants for intersection signal optimization. This will require a good level of collaboration and coordination.

Majority of the work for this hire will be highly specialized areas that are mostly learned on the job. This job exposes the candidate to modern signal equipment and how to optimize them, and our well‑organized operation in responding to new and normal deficiencies during normal and emergency occurrence caused by bad weather. It will also afford you the opportunity to learn collaborative work approach as what we do cuts across many sections.

Core Responsibilities
  • Acts as a consultant to supervisors of special maintenance crews.
  • Coordinates traffic engineering studies and traffic counts.
  • Develops work orders and other agreements with consulting engineers for building system projects studies and analysis.
  • Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on‑site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support.
  • Investigates and responds to public complaints on traffic signals, signs, railroad crossings, pavement markings, traffic management systems or other traffic related items.
  • Meets with law enforcement agencies and/or city officials to discuss traffic problems and possible solutions.
  • Performs data collection, evaluation, analyses, studies, investigations, forecasts and/or plan development associated with facility issues.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities (Transportation Engineer I)
  • Negotiates fees, explains scope of work and monitors consultant design contracts.
  • Oversees the operations and maintenance of an ITS operations center/managed area.
  • Provides technical assistance for the development of rural ITS/traffic management corridors.
  • Responsible for Traffic Engineering operations.
  • Responsible for Traffic Systems Management.
  • Coordinates traffic engineering studies and traffic counts.
  • Develops traffic engineering and traffic management system policies, procedures and standards.
  • Interprets manuals and required guidelines for traffic operations.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications for Transportation Engineer I
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science; bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
