Position: Aerospace Engineer, AST, Aerospace Flight Systems (Direct Hire)

Summary

As an AST Environmental Control engineer within the Crew and Thermal Systems Division, you will be responsible for technology development, test systems design/oversight, and/or project management of government furnished equipment in the area of Environmental Control and Life Support, Active Thermal Control, and Space Suit Systems. You will lead a team of highly skilled engineers and be recognized as integral member of the organization in supporting both programmatic and engineering management.

Responsibilities
  • Perform analyses, design, and buildup of test systems in support of Active Thermal Control, Life Support, and Space Suit testing.
  • Oversee, coordinate, or perform pressure system trades and designs in compliance to procedural requirements.
  • Perform project management duties associated to technology development, test system fabrication, and/or government furnished equipment projects.
  • Execute the entire life cycle project which includes requirements development, system design, fabrication/buildup, and delivery of hardware or systems.
  • Collaborate with experts to provide life support expertise to human spaceflight Program Offices and other NASA organizations in the area of design/test data reviews, recommending solutions for technical problems and investigating system anomalies.
  • Work collaboratively with on‑site support contractor management teams to lead a multi‑talented team in implementing institutional process to build and certify Government Furnished Equipment.
  • Communicate technical principles, progress, and risks to both programmatic customers and engineering management.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. NASA utilizes OPM‑approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work.

The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.

To qualify for GS‑13
, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS‑12 level:

  • Conducting analysis of hardware and test systems through data analysis, detailed design, systems engineering, and testing;
  • Supporting projects, capability, and/or, system team to ensure accountability, work distribution, mentorship, and effective communication with program and engineering management;
  • Working with systems engineering, project management, and/or theoretical analyses in support of Environmental Control and Life Support, Active Thermal, and/or Space Suit Systems.
