Position: Senior Fire Life Safety Engineer

Position Overview

Senior Fire Life Safety Engineer in Kiewit Industrial & Water Engineering's Design Engineering team. The role bridges process safety, facility engineering, and construction execution, ensuring fire protection systems are code compliant and aligned with operational risk, equipment layout, and process hazards.

Responsibilities
  • Provide fire protection and life safety design, analysis, and construction support for industrial facilities, including fire and smoke modeling, hazards analysis, risk assessments, smoke management plans, explosion protection strategies, and fire‑area separation concepts.
  • Lead fire protection projects and coordinate with other engineers.
  • Perform fire hazard analysis to determine appropriate active and passive fire protection schemes.
  • Generate calculations for sizing water supply, fire pumps, and underground pipe sizing.
  • Develop subcontractor scope of work packages and manage award and performance of subcontractors.
  • Review subcontractor fire suppression and fire alarm system plans and calculations.
  • Review fire barrier and penetration seal requirements for specific hazards.
  • Perform life safety reviews for buildings and industrial equipment areas; prepare system documentation, O&M requirements, and emergency response procedures.
  • Travel approximately 25% of the time to client and job site locations.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or related field; EIT preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in fire protection and life safety design/analysis and construction support for industrial, power or similar facilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self‑driven, motivated, team‑oriented, and willing to travel.
  • Experience with Data Centers, Water Treatment, Power, or Nuclear Facilities highly desired.
  • Proficiency with NFPA codes 13, 14, 20, 22, 24, 72, 101 and International Building Code and International Fire Code; familiarity with NFPA 850 and 2001 preferred.
  • Ability to navigate local code requirements and FM data sheets.
  • Construction administration experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and commitment to meet government security requirements for nuclear power and highly secured buildings.

Bloomington, MN; or other U.S. locations. Relocation offered to Lenexa, KS.

Compensation

Base salary: $120,000 – $160,000, subject to education, experience, skills, and location.
