Since 1947, Powell Industries has been a trusted Houston-based innovator in custom-engineered electrical power distribution and control systems. We design and manufacture ANSI metal-clad and metal-enclosed switch gear, integrated power control rooms, bus systems, and advanced automation solutions that power critical infrastructure for oil & gas, petrochemical, utilities, data centers, and more. With a global footprint and a commitment to "Powered By Safety," Powell offers a collaborative, family-like culture where employees drive innovation and enjoy long-term career growth.
Senior Switchgear Engineer
Role Overview
As a Senior Switchgear Engineer, you'll lead the design, analysis, and delivery of complex medium-voltage (MV) and low-voltage (LV) switch gear solutions for high-profile industrial projects. You'll mentor junior engineers, ensure compliance with IEEE/ANSI standards, and contribute to Powell's reputation for reliable, custom-engineered power systems.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead detailed design and engineering of custom ANSI metal-clad switch gear, arc-resistant gear, and integrated power distribution systems.
* Perform power system studies, protective relaying coordination, arc flash analysis, and short-circuit calculations using tools like ETAP or SKM.
* Develop technical specifications, schematics, and bill of materials for customer projects.
* Collaborate with project management, manufacturing, and field service teams to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery.
* Provide technical leadership on bids, customer presentations, and value-engineering opportunities.
* Mentor and guide junior engineers on best practices in switch gear design and industry standards.
* Support continuous improvement initiatives in design processes and product innovation.
Qualifications
* Bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering (or related field).
* 10+ years of experience in switch gear design, preferably with MV/LV metal-clad/metal-enclosed systems.
* Strong knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, IEC standards, and NEC requirements.
* Proficiency in design software (AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP, or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite.
* PE license preferred; EIT certification a plus.
* Excellent communication skills for customer and cross-functional collaboration.
* Ability to travel occasionally for site visits or customer meetings (domestic/international).
What Powell Offers
* Competitive salary and performance-based bonuses.
* Comprehensive benefits including health, dental, vision, 401(k) match, and paid time off.
* Professional development opportunities and tuition reimbursement.
* A supportive, family-oriented culture with opportunities for advancement.
* The chance to work on impactful projects that power essential industries.
