Position Overview

As a Lead Structural Engineer, you will be part of a growing team that supports all aspects of the construction process by performing innovative design engineering, brainstorming conceptual designs, reviewing structural calculations, developing plans, and scheduling tasks to meet client needs while mitigating risk and ensuring safety.

District Overview

Kiewit Engineering Group, Inc is a full‑service engineering firm that serves the LNG, midstream, refining, and petrochemical markets. The team includes structural, civil, piping, mechanical, process, process safety, electrical, and instrument disciplines and focuses on constructability and safety in the earliest phases of projects.

Location

This position is based out of our Energy Corridor office and typically requires less than 25 percent travel. Opportunities for flexible work are available.

Responsibilities
  • Perform complex calculations and apply standards correctly without supervision; take lead when working with peers.
  • Review the work of engineers and designers and develop engineering and design documents for the project.
  • Analyze structures using various structural engineering software programs for the design of buildings, foundations, equipment platforms, pipe racks, and miscellaneous concrete and steel structures; prepare quantities, cost estimates, and supporting documentation.
  • Prepare engineering drawings and calculations, including specifications for the discipline.
  • Ensure compliance with standards, specifications, local codes, and regulations.
  • Use analytical skills and data‑driven decision making.
  • Review vendor documents to ensure specifications and data sheet requirements are met.
  • Lead mid‑ to large‑size projects or proposals.
  • Develop and lead others in improving design and reducing cost.
  • Consider multiple solutions and make decisions based on data analysis.
  • Manage several assignments simultaneously.
  • Apply industry and company standards to design and engineer effectively.
  • Serve as a resource to less experienced engineers.
  • Review application of standards for correct interpretations.
  • Identify scope changes during projects and produce design changes to stay within budget and schedule.
  • Recognize the importance of customer needs and deliver quality work.
  • Perform work efficiently and effectively to maximize productivity.
  • Lead quality checks for design and engineering on mid‑ to major‑size projects.
  • Establish credibility in technical competency and team leadership.
  • Prioritize time to meet team commitments and work requirements.
  • Contribute to development of client proposals and project cost estimates.
Qualifications
  • 10–18 years of relevant experience in refining and petrochemical industry, preferably with EPC experience.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) required.
  • Proficient in engineering software such as STAAD Pro and RISA Foundation (preferred).
  • Self‑direct work with limited supervision.
  • Provide guidance, leadership, and training to less experienced engineers.
  • Lead small teams to complete task/design on project.
  • Coordinate work within discipline department and represent project team.
  • Adapt to varying demands and perform well under pressure.
  • Develop and present work in well‑constructed written and verbal presentations.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisor and department members.
  • Work collaboratively across departments to solve problems.
  • Support project teams in a positive and productive manner.
  • Serve as technical resource and point of contact for internal/external customers.
