Position: Engineer I, Senior - Electrical and Automation Engineer

Job Summary

ABS Government Engineering Services (GES) is looking for a Senior Engineer I to assist with ship Electrical and Automation system drawing reviews. The role involves conducting engineering design reviews and analysis assignments for major or multiple smaller U.S. Government Navy, MARAD, MSC, Coast Guard, NOAA, and other vessel projects. The work requires conventional engineering knowledge and often involves cross‑functional coordination and problem resolution.

The successful candidate will work in person at the ABS Office in Spring, Texas. The position is hybrid:
Remote Monday and Friday, in‑office Tuesday‑Thursday.

What You Will Do
  • Under supervision, perform detailed engineering reviews of plans to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and contract commitments.
  • Resolve moderately complex problems including conflicting design requirements, material standards, and coordination among disciplines.
  • Apply knowledge of engineering principles in broad technical areas.
  • Draft accurate reports, client responses, and other communications for review.
  • Prepare accurate weekly reports and billing for all work performed.
  • Communicate workload status to team members and ensure client needs are met.
  • Liaise with flag administrations for technical interpretations or exemptions.
  • Provide technical advice to field operations and technical offices.
  • Suggest new approaches and recommend changes to methods, procedures, or designs.
  • Work directly with clients to identify and resolve technical problems.
  • Collaborate within the team, or autonomously with minimal supervision after training.
  • Implement and maintain ABS Quality System requirements after training.
What You Will Need
  • B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline; M.S. preferred.
  • Two to five years of experience in military or government vessel engineering, familiar with ship electrical and automation systems.
  • Experience in a shipyard, NAVSEA, USCG, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or classification society is preferred.
  • U.S. person with the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Advanced industry‑related experience and practical application.
  • Familiarity with marine electrical and automation system design and verification.
  • Knowledge of applicable Rules, Regulations, and their interpretation.
  • Understanding of U.S. Coast Guard requirements, SOLAS, MARPOL.
  • Knowledge of company business policies and procedures.
  • Strong client‑relations skills and ability to motivate peers and subordinates.
  • Excellent technical, interpersonal, communication, and writing skills with a client service mindset.
  • Ability to multitask, work well in a team, and maintain independent discipline.
  • Meticulous, detail‑oriented, and design‑review oriented.
  • Effective English verbal and written communication.
  • Capacity to analyze and solve complex or unique engineering problems.
  • Planning skills for efficient scheduling of work assignments.
  • Working knowledge of ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management Systems (internal candidates only).
It Would Be Nice If You Had

Professional or chartered engineer license.

Reporting Relationships

The incumbent generally reports to a Principal Engineer but may report to others depending on assignment specifics. This position has no direct reports.

Notice

This position requires access to information subject to Export Administration Regulations and International Traffic in Arms Regulations. Employment is contingent upon verification that the candidate is a “U.S. Person” or on obtaining necessary export licenses.
