Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer for a contract‑to‑hire opportunity with our client in Houston, TX. This position will support the design, development, and implementation of PLC‑based control systems for modular process units. The I&C Engineer will play a key role in delivering turnkey automation and control system solutions while supporting projects from concept development through detailed engineering, integration, and startup.
The ideal candidate is a hands‑on engineer with strong Allen‑Bradley/Rockwell Automation experience who thrives in a fast‑paced, project‑driven environment and can independently develop engineering deliverables while collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams.
- Instrumentation & Control System Design
- Develop and maintain critical instrumentation and control documentation, including:
- I/O Lists
- Instrument Indexes
- Control Narratives
- Wiring and Interconnection Schematics
- Loop Diagrams
- Wiring Diagrams
- Panel Layouts
- Design PLC control architectures for new modular process unit projects.
- Develop control logic, operating sequences, and control loop strategies.
- Design and specify:
- PLC Cabinets
- Junction Boxes
- Instrumentation and Control System Components
- Develop and maintain critical instrumentation and control documentation, including:
- PLC Programming & Automation
- Program, modify, and troubleshoot Allen‑Bradley/Rockwell PLC systems.
- Support automation system upgrades and modifications.
- Maintain and optimize existing control systems.
- Participate in control system testing, commissioning, and startup activities.
- Project Execution
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, and project teams throughout project life cycles.
- Support detailed engineering and integration activities.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable industry standards and project requirements.
- Provide technical support during fabrication, installation, and commissioning phases.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or a related technical field; equivalent experience will also be considered.
- Strong hands‑on experience with:
- Allen‑Bradley/Rockwell PLC systems
- PLC programming and troubleshooting
- Industrial automation and control systems
- Proven experience developing:
- Control system documentation
- Electrical and instrumentation design packages
- Instrumentation and controls engineering deliverables
- Experience working in industrial process environments such as:
- Oil & Gas
- Chemical Processing
- Petrochemical
- Power Generation
- Manufacturing
- Experience supporting modular process skid or packaged equipment projects.
- Familiarity with industrial networking and communication protocols.
- Experience with control system integration, FAT/SAT testing, and commissioning activities.
- Strong problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic project environment.
