Role Overview
Our client, a rapidly growing manufacturer of spray polyurethane foam insulation and roof coatings, is seeking a Director of Building Science to establish and lead a critical technical function supporting product innovation, market growth, and industry leadership. Serving as the company's foremost building envelope expert, this role will provide strategic guidance on building science principles, code compliance, product performance, and application best practices across commercial and residential construction markets.
The Director of Building Science will partner closely with Product Development, Technical Services, Sales, Marketing, and Executive Leadership to ensure that product solutions deliver superior thermal, moisture, air barrier, and durability performance while meeting evolving building codes, industry standards, and customer requirements.
- Key Responsibilities
- Serve as technical authority on building envelope performance, including thermal, air, water, and vapor control.
- Evaluate roofing and wall insulation / assembly designs for moisture management, condensation risk, durability, and energy performance across varying climate zones.
- Monitor, interpret, and communicate evolving building codes, regulations, and industry standards impacting insulation, roofing, and coating systems.
- Support product development and innovation initiatives through building science research, testing, validation, and performance analysis.
- Lead or support third-party testing, certifications, code approvals, and technical documentation efforts.
- Provide technical guidance and training to internal teams.
- Act as a trusted technical resource for external stakeholders.
- Develop and deliver technical presentations, educational programs, webinars, and industry training sessions.
- Represent the company at industry associations, technical committees, trade events, or customer-facing engagements.
- Collaborate with field and technical teams to address application challenges, installation best practices, and product performance questions.
- Key Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Building Science, Construction Science, Architecture, or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in building science, building envelope systems, insulation, roofing, construction materials, or related industries.
- Strong knowledge of moisture management, condensation analysis, thermal performance, air barrier systems, and building envelope design principles.
- Experience with spray polyurethane foam, insulation products, roofing systems, coatings, or other exterior building envelope technologies.
- Working knowledge of applicable building codes and standards, including the IBC, IRC, IECC, and related code provisions affecting insulation and roofing systems.
- Experience supporting product testing, code compliance, technical certifications, and building product performance evaluations.
- Strong communication & presentation skills; able to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Preferred Background & Skills
- Familiar with continuous insulation strategies, high-performance wall assemblies, and energy-efficient building design.
- Experience with fire, air, water, structural, and durability testing.
- Participation in industry organizations, or code development initiatives.
- Experience with technical education programs, AIA-accredited courses, webinars, or industry training.
- Ability to influence product strategy and serve as a thought leader within the construction industry.
