Position Overview
The successful candidate will set methods and criteria for the execution of customer repair work for various types of rotating equipment (Steam Turbines, Centrifugal Compressors, Axial Compressors and other associated equipment). Repair work will include overhauls, general maintenance upgrades and rerates for OEM and non-OEM equipment.
Purpose of the JobThe Shop Engineer will engineer repair solutions and ensure the technical integrity of all work performed in the Repair Shop, while following Elliott and industry standards. This position performs as a technical liaison for the repair shop team, field service and field sales personnel in performance of customer repair projects, shop modernization projects and general engineering and drafting in support of the same.
The primary objective is to ensure that good and sufficient technical oversight, where required, is applied to mechanical repair and modernization work performed within the Houston Service Center.
- Bachelor of Science Engineering (Mechanical, Aerospace), Bachelor of Science Engineering Technology, or equivalent four‑year degree.
- Minimum 5 years of total experience, including at least 5 years working with rotary equipment such as Steam Turbines and Centrifugal Compressors for repair, inspection and overhaul.
- 3+ years of experience in shop engineering or related experience, including fabrication, machining and the creation of industrial drawings.
- Background with repair methods such as welding, coating, assembly and dis‑assembly for all levels and complexity of numerous designs/equipment (blades, impellers, rotors, casings, full units).
- Basic exposure to metallurgy, material selection, heat treatments.
Job Responsibilities
- Ability to work overtime as needed.
- Recommend safe work practices as per policy across the plant.
- Meet and exceed annual objectives.
- Provide technical assistance to shop floor regarding tooling and machining practices of particular parts.
- Support the development and implementation of continuous improvement activities, including best practices, standard work instructions, safety culture, habits, and good housekeeping techniques.
- Deal with non‑conformities systematically, reviewing and dispositioning product non‑conformances.
- Archive all engineering job‑related records in a timely manner for better traceability and retrieval.
- Design tooling and fixtures.
- Ensure Quality Assurance Plans are followed strictly without deviations, while providing engineering support and repair recommendations.
- Set methods and criteria for repair work in the shop in conjunction with the Lead Engineer.
- Create work packages detailing process specifications, material specifications and other technical details for project execution.
- Ensure the technical integrity of all recommendations of work performed in the Repair Shop and add value by improving current methods and processes.
- Prepare repair proposals based on contract reviews and feasibility studies.
- Compile findings and technical data to prepare customer reports (repair recommendations).
- Assist the shop floor during repair execution.
- Support the Sales Engineers in the quotation phase.
- Responsible for reverse engineering of non‑complex non‑Elliott products to achieve successful component repairs and delivery.
- Execute service engineering assignments requiring standard techniques, procedures, CAD and criteria, involving independent action and decision.
- Collaborate with other departments to insure prompt and effective problem solving of reported service shop troubles for the assigned product line.
- Perform liaison functions with other engineering departments on specification, manufacturing, assembly, material quality, testing, repair, performance and operation for assigned products; including consulting with field service, service parts, and service repair on field trouble jobs, defective parts, rebuilds, rework, etc., and routing the group on new parts orders, engineering studies and design changes.
