Overview

The Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer is responsible for the design, specification, and commissioning support of process instrumentation and control systems across midstream oil & gas projects, with additional exposure to industrial sectors such as pharmaceuticals, food & beverage, and consumer products.

The role translates process requirements (P&IDs and engineering data) into complete instrumentation and control solutions, ensuring safe, reliable, and standards-compliant operation. The engineer acts as a discipline lead and key technical interface between internal engineering teams, clients, EPC contractors, and vendors.

Core Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain P&IDs in line with ISA standards and client requirements
  • Produce instrument indexes, I/O lists, and tag structures from engineering deliverables
  • Prepare instrument datasheets for field instruments, analyzers, and metering systems
  • Develop control philosophies, operating narratives, and sequence-of-operations (startup, normal, shutdown, ESD)
  • Define PLC/RIO requirements and support control system architecture design
  • Create Cause & Effect matrices and functional safety documentation (SIS, SIL, IEC 61511)
  • Support alarm management and rationalisation in accordance with ISA-18.2
  • Perform control valve sizing and specification, including fail-safe and actuator selection
  • Specify measurement and custody transfer systems using AGA/API standards
  • Support hazardous area classification and equipment selection (NEC / IEC / ATEX)
  • Participate in HAZOP, LOPA, SIL studies, FAT, SAT, and commissioning activities
  • Review vendor documentation and support construction-phase queries (RFIs, redlines, punch lists)
  • Provide field support during installation, loop checks, startup, and commissioning
  • Ensure QA/QC compliance and maintain document control across deliverables
  • Track engineering progress and provide status reporting to project management
  • P&IDs and instrumentation tagging structures

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, or Controls)
  • 5–10+ years’ instrumentation & controls experience in process industries
  • Strong knowledge of ISA, API, IEC, NFPA, and OSHA standards
  • Familiarity with control systems, SIS, and hazardous area classification
  • Strong technical writing and cross-discipline coordination skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and support site activities as required
Preferred
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license (or eligible)
  • Functional safety certification (TÜV or equivalent)
  • Experience with custody transfer and gas measurement systems
  • Experience in regulated industries (pharma / food & beverage)
