Job Overview
The Instrumentation & Controls Designer is responsible for creating detailed 2D and 3D drawings and models using software such as AutoCAD, CADWorx Structure, and Electrical Design Suite. This role requires the ability to work with minimal supervision from lead designers and/or engineers while efficiently managing assigned tasks. The I&C Designer will develop comprehensive construction packages, perform quality checks, and ensure compliance with project standards and specifications.
The Designer will collaborate effectively with the project team to meet deadlines and address any challenges or discrepancies that arise during the design process. Under the supervision of engineering, the Designer will interpret and refine concepts and sketches into construction drawings, and may delegate drafting or modeling tasks to Instrumentation & Controls Designers as needed.
- Advanced skillsets in Bluebeam, AutoCAD, CADWorx Structure, Electrical Design Suite.
- Participate in site visits as required to verify as-built conditions or gather field data.
- Take ownership of assigned projects or tasks, ensuring timely and high-quality deliverables.
- Assist the lead designer in the review and markup stages of all applicable vendor drawings, ensuring critical information is presented clearly and adequately for constructability impact.
- Ensure vendor drawings align with design models and drawings.
- Proficient with conduit fill, cable tray fill, voltage drop, cable sizing, and de‑rating.
- Efficiently produce electrical conduit & cable schedules using Microsoft Excel.
- Create detailed 2D deliverables for general drawings, typical/standard drawings, block diagrams, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, plan drawings, and loop diagrams using applicable software.
- Produce instrument location plans using 3D external reference models and applicable software.
- Develop complex 3D models of cable tray systems, conduit routing, and associated electrical equipment using CADWorx Structure and Electrical Design Suite.
- Assist the lead designer with generating and maintaining line-item lists.
- Perform quantity take‑offs from models.
- Ensure drawings and models adhere to project specifications, industry, client/internal standards, and encompass SOW.
- Prepare deliverables for client submissions.
- Perform thorough quality checks of own work and of I&C Designers before submission.
- Maintain records of revisions and markups through project duration.
- Delegate tasks to CAD Designers, manage their tasks, and support the Lead Designer in coordinating overall workflow.
- Serve as a resource for CAD Designers, providing mentorship and support as needed.
- Familiar with internal, client, and industry standards such as NEC, NEMA, API 500.
- Maintain consistency in drafting output and ensure all files are organized according to data management protocols.
- Work closely with leads, E&I engineers, and other disciplines to ensure models and design packages meet project goals and are cohesively integrated.
- Participate in internal project meetings as required by the discipline lead.
- Manage on-demand tasks assigned by the lead and communicate any potential impacts on other tasks.
- Address design challenges, discrepancies, or missing information in coordination with the project team.
- Cross‑train into electrical philosophy, standards, and specifications.
- 5–10+ years of Instrumentation & Controls or Electrical Design experience.
- Experience creating construction drawing packages.
- Experience performing field verification/site visits.
- Experience coordinating with engineers and multiple disciplines.
- Experience reviewing vendor drawings.
- Experience mentoring junior CAD designers.
- Experience working with industrial facility projects.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Problem‑solving abilities.
- Associate degree in Drafting, Design Technology, Electrical Technology, or a related field; or technical/vocational training in CAD and electrical design; or equivalent industry experience in Instrumentation & Controls design.
