JOB SUMMARY

The Field I&E Specialist serves as the organization's primary subject matter expert for advanced instrumentation, electrical, and controls troubleshooting across a network of water and wastewater treatment facilities. This is a highly autonomous, travel-intensive role (75%+ travel) requiring the individual to deploy to sites when issues exceed the diagnostic capabilities of local operators or maintenance staff.

The ideal candidate brings deep, hands‑on expertise across PLC/SCADA systems, electrical distribution, motor controls, and process instrumentation and is equally comfortable troubleshooting a field instrument loop or navigating a PLC ladder logic fault. Strong communication skills are essential, as this role regularly interfaces with site operators, plant managers, and engineering staff to resolve critical issues and transfer knowledge.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Advanced Field Troubleshooting
  • Respond to escalated instrumentation, electrical, and control system failures at water and wastewater treatment sites that are beyond the scope of local operator capabilities.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex faults across PLC platforms (Allen‑Bradley/Rockwell preferred), SCADA systems, HMI interfaces, and field control networks (Ethernet/IP, Modbus).
  • Troubleshoot low and medium voltage electrical systems including MCCs, VFDs, soft starters, switch gear, transformers, and distribution panels.
  • Diagnose and repair field instrumentation including flow meters, level transmitters, pressure transducers, pH/ORP/DO/turbidity analyzers, and online process analyzers.
  • Perform in‑depth loop checks, signal tracing, and fault isolation across 4‑20mA, HART, and digital I/O circuits.
  • Assess site conditions, develop rapid troubleshooting plans, and execute repairs with minimal disruption to plant operations.
Electrical Systems
  • Perform testing, diagnostic, and repair work on motors, motor control circuits, VFDs, relay logic, and programmable relays.
  • Conduct infrared thermography, insulation resistance testing (megger), and power quality analysis as needed.
  • Read, interpret, and redline electrical schematics, one‑line diagrams, and as‑built drawings; update site documentation following repairs.
  • Ensure all electrical work is performed in strict compliance with NFPA 70E arc flash safety standards and site‑specific LOTO procedures.
Instrumentation Calibration & Maintenance
  • Perform precision calibration, loop tuning, and verification of process instruments using appropriate reference standards and calibration equipment.
  • Conduct as‑found / as‑left documentation and maintain calibration records in accordance with regulatory and quality requirements.
  • Advise site staff on instrument selection, installation best practices, and preventive maintenance intervals.
Site Support & Knowledge Transfer
  • Collaborate directly with local operators and site maintenance staff to resolve issues, explain findings, and build on‑site diagnostic capabilities.
  • Provide on‑the‑job coaching and informal training to site personnel during visits to reduce recurrence of similar issues.
  • Prepare clear, concise field service reports documenting findings, work performed, parts used, and recommended follow‑up actions.
  • Identify recurring or systemic equipment/system issues across the portfolio and escalate to management with recommendations.
  • Assist with capital project planning by providing field assessments and technical input on aging or failing systems.

Any other duties or projects as assigned by management.
