Senior Mechanical Switchgear Engineer
Job Description
The Senior Mechanical Switchgear Engineer leads the mechanical design of custom low-voltage and medium-voltage switch gear, from concept through fabrication. This role combines deep 3D CAD expertise with hands-on leadership, guiding a team of engineers and designers while collaborating closely with electrical, manufacturing, and project teams. The position offers significant growth potential, including the opportunity to move into a formal leadership or manager role within 2-3 years, and provides exposure to a fast-growing business with substantial data center and other industrial projects.
Responsibilities
+ Lead the mechanical design of custom LV/MV switch gear enclosures, assemblies, and components throughout the product lifecycle.
+ Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and mechanical drawings using Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, and other drawing software.
+ Oversee and conduct design reviews to ensure compliance with mechanical requirements as well as UL and NEMA standards.
+ Collaborate closely with electrical engineering, manufacturing, and project teams to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and aligned with project requirements.
+ Support and drive research and development initiatives for new and existing industrial equipment and switch gear products.
+ Apply finite element analysis (FEA) and sound mechanical engineering principles to validate and optimize designs.
+ Design and develop sheet metal components and assemblies for low-voltage and medium-voltage switch gear applications.
+ Manage multiple concurrent projects, typically working on 3-4 projects at a time, and ensure timely delivery of design milestones.
+ Lead or significantly contribute to project management activities related to mechanical design, including planning, tracking, and reporting.
+ Mentor and support junior mechanical engineers and mechanical designers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
+ Participate in and lead design reviews with cross-functional stakeholders, incorporating feedback and resolving design issues.
+ Ensure that all mechanical designs meet quality, safety, and performance requirements and align with OEM standards.
+ Follow projects from initial design through fabrication, providing engineering support to the shop floor as needed.
Essential Skills
+ B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
+ Experience working within an OEM environment.
+ Hands-on switch gear design experience, specifically with low-voltage and medium-voltage (LV/MV) systems.
+ Strong mechanical design experience with industrial equipment and switch gear.
+ Advanced 3D modeling skills using Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD.
+ Proficiency with mechanical drawing software and creation of detailed assemblies and manufacturing drawings.
+
Experience with sheet metal design for enclosures and mechanical components.
+ Understanding of UL and NEMA mechanical compliance requirements for switch gear and related equipment.
+
Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) to validate and optimize mechanical designs.
+ Proven product development experience, taking products from concept through production within an OEM setting.
