Position: Portable Life Support System (PLSS) Project/Test Engineer

Portable Life Support System (PLSS) Project/Test Engineer

We are seeking a PLSS Project/Test Engineer to support NASA’s deep space exploration initiatives. The role focuses on project engineering functions for EVA spacesuit design, development, procurement, manufacturing, testing, and certification.

Responsibilities
  • Perform project engineering functions for EVA spacesuit design, development, procurement, manufacturing, test, and certification.
  • Analyze customer requirements and develop design solutions within a team environment.
  • Collaborate with PLSS Team leadership to update plans and agreements for PLSS work scope.
  • Design, develop, test, implement, and analyze technical products and systems, including equipment design, test configuration assembly, and completion of PLSS hardware testing.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and resolving technical issues identified during testing and integration.
  • Review engineering drawings, requirements, and system specifications to ensure accuracy and compliance with NASA standards.
  • Contribute to documentation, including test reports, hazard analyses, design reviews, procedures, and TPS creation and execution.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (preferably from an accredited engineering school).
  • Experience in the field or related area, with at least 1–2 years in a similar role.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
Preferences
  • Detailed knowledge of vent loop gas flow rates, pressure management, and PLSS outlet CO2 control in closed and open loop modes; understand design goals, component functions, and impacts of design changes.
  • Knowledge of thermal control and auxiliary thermal control loops, including heat removal, pressures, flow rates, material compatibility, and testing history.
  • Experience with pressure systems including relief valves, pressure transducers, flow meters, and calibration procedures.
Eligibility
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Residency may be required.
  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
Essential Functions
  • Work Environment:
    Primarily office-based, but may involve indoor/outdoor tasks depending on responsibilities.
  • Physical Requirements:

    Sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time); lifting up to 25 lbs. occasionally.
  • Equipment:
    Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).
  • Attendance:
    Regular attendance required; flexibility to work outside normal schedule as needed.
  • Professional behavior:
    Appropriate grooming and dress; no safety hazards.
