Advance Your Career in Traffic Engineering! The Houston District Traffic Engineering Section is seeking a Traffic Engineer to join our team. This position offers the opportunity to develop PS&E packages for traffic signals, traffic signing and pavement markings, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and roadway illumination projects, while supporting transportation improvements that enhance safety and mobility across the Houston District.

Salary: $85,000 – $114,000 per year (Yearly, Exempt).

• Assist Project Managers with resource assignments, schedules, scope, communication, quality, and procurement.
• Coordinate and/or monitor assigned projects, programs, and plans.
• Coordinate traffic engineering studies and traffic counts.
• Design all traffic management computer/communication/video systems and/or traffic signals, radios, and railroad crossing equipment.
• Develop traffic engineering and traffic management system policies, procedures, and standards.
• Investigate and respond to public complaints on traffic signals, signs, railroad crossings, pavement markings, traffic management systems, or other traffic‑related items.
• Review and process Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submissions, special specifications, or special provisions.
• Review traffic engineering studies, warranting of traffic signals, and speed zones.
• Coordinate with others to develop, monitor, and update integrated project plans and schedules to ensure efficient project execution.
• Oversee and/or perform traffic engineering studies to recommend solutions for high‑accident locations, warrant traffic signals and speed zones, and determine capacity and channelization of highways.
• Conduct complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates, and contracts for traffic operations projects.
• Perform data collection, evaluations, analyses, studies, inspections, forecasts, assessments, and plan development for complex projects.
• Keep project designs, shop drawings, and field changes for traffic control devices, signals, signs, markings, detours, traffic‑control plans, electrical distribution, roadway lighting, and traffic management systems up to date.

• Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science, or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
• 4 to 6 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (full‑time or prorated part‑time). Graduate‑level education may substitute experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
• Valid driver’s license; position requires driving a state vehicle.
• Licensed Professional Engineer, or requirement to obtain a Texas PE license within six (6) months of hire.

• Experience performing traffic engineering studies and analysis using tools such as Synchro, Highway Capacity Software, and others.
• In‑depth knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and traffic engineering principles.
• Knowledge of statistical analysis methodologies and reporting procedures.
• Experience preparing, reviewing, and processing applicable plans, specifications, and estimates.
• Knowledge of traffic management systems operations and design.
• Understanding of traffic signal system design, testing, and maintenance operations.
• Fundamentals of electrical/electronic design procedures.
• Ability to apply engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities.
• Planning, coordinating, and handling multiple projects to meet short‑term and long‑term deadlines.
• Strong computer skills, including use of applicable programs, applications, and systems.
• Demonstrated logical reasoning, problem definition, fact establishment, and decision making to support business objectives.
