We seek a talented Test System Safety Engineer to support ongoing and future project testing needs within the Engineering Crew and Thermal Systems Division. The role is integral to the test team, providing analysis for test readiness, hazard analyses, and facility safety;
it may involve collaboration with other Engineering Directorates as requested. Amentum is NASA's largest engineering solutions provider working with NASA centers across the United States.
Responsibilities and analyses will focus on developing hazard analyses for test articles and environments, test readiness, and safety criteria for test hardware, systems, and procedures. The position supports multiple programs and projects and participates in project reviews to ensure safety tasks are identified and scheduled.
Responsibilities- Perform trade‑off studies, analyses, and systems interfacing, and coordinate analyses, testing, and verification efforts
- Analyze engineering concepts from requirements, mission needs, and/or system improvement needs
- Contribute to the safety culture and foster teamwork across the Facility and Test Department, Amentum, and NASA customers
- Review facility systems and support equipment, specifications, and operations; establish risk levels and safety requirements for tests and facilities
- Independently analyze and recommend safety criteria for test hardware, system design, equipment, and procedures to control or eliminate hazards
- Conduct system safety engineering for multiple programs; participate in project reviews and ensure safety tasks are on schedule
- Create hazard analyses of facility hardware used in support of flight hardware testing using techniques such as Hazard Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis
- Develop hazard controls and verifications based on identified hazards
- Research, develop, and present completed analyses to facility managers and Test Readiness Review Board
- Perform other duties as required
Required Education/Experience/
Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, plus two (2) years of related experience
- Experience performing hazard analyses and safety compliance per JPR 1700.1, “JSC Safety and Health Handbook”
- Excellent communication skills and a team‑oriented approach
- Strong problem‑solving capability and mentoring skills
Preferences:
- Electrical Engineering degree with extensive NASA or space‑related experience
- Working knowledge of NASA and industry safety codes, standards, and processes and their application in a facility test system environment
Essential Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen and able to obtain a U.S. government background investigation
- Eligible for government security investigation and access to classified information
- Ability to sit for extended periods; may require lifting up to 25 lb; mobility to enter test facility areas
- Typically an office environment but can involve indoor or outdoor work depending on task
- Standard office equipment; regular attendance as scheduled
- Ability to work outside normal schedules to meet peak periods
- Ability to work in a team and demonstrate professional behavior that enhances productivity
- Grooming and dress appropriate for position and safety considerations
- May require some commuting/travel to other installations
