Occupational Health & Safety, Safety Engineer
Overview
Applicants will work in a dynamic team environment with NASA customers, users, and partners on design, maintenance, and operations of systems and hardware in COSMOS facilities. Collaborate with Platform/OS Engineers, Software Engineers, System Engineers, Technical Integration, Maintenance and Operations, and Project Managers to facilitate changes, maintenance, and operations across complex systems. Strong interpersonal and written communication skills are required for customer interactions.
Self-starter with initiative, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities is essential.
- Work with customers, users, and engineers to incorporate safety requirements in designs and operations.
- Perform high-level requirement assessments and facilitate detailed safety assessments by technical teams.
- Develop and maintain schedules for safety reviews and test readiness reviews.
- Create and/or update safety documentation; provide safety support to implementation organizations.
- Communicate effectively within the organization and with customer contacts.
- Collaborate in a team setting to share ideas and promote a strong safety culture across the COSMOS contract, including subcontractors.
- Develop HSSE standards, regulations, and procedures to identify and control hazards, reducing accidents and occupational illnesses.
- Advise program/contract management on health, safety, security, and environment matters.
- Schedule, coordinate, and participate in Test Readiness Reviews (TRR) and Safety Reviews (SR) for training events and new hardware.
- Investigate and analyze risks and incidents, determine root causes, and apply preventive measures.
- Conduct audits and inspections to ensure safety standards are met and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Lead COSMOS SAFE Committees with the IMOC team to improve employee participation.
- Coordinate, compile, and submit safety metrics and reports; generate Mishap/Close Call reports.
- Provide safety-related training and perform Job Hazard Analysis.
Education & Experience
:
Requires a BS in a safety-related field (e.g., Environmental Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Engineering) with at least 15 years of related experience.
Required Knowledge/Skills
:
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and professionally represent the program.
- Highly motivated, willing to learn and apply new concepts, tools, and software.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, especially with other organizations.
- Good problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Understanding of NASA requirements, especially JSC NASA Safety Standards; strong knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations.
- Experience with the OSHA VPP program; risk assessment, incident investigation, and training experience.
- Public speaking, site monitoring and auditing capabilities; relationship and consensus-building skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team.
- Certified Safety Professional (preferred).
Desired Knowledge/Skills
:
- Knowledge of Amentum HSSE policies and the Zero Harm safety process and Absolutes (e.g., MyKey, Safety Energy, Incident Investigation, TSTIs, Keys, Courage to Care).
- Leadership skills; knowledge of Mission Control Center, Training Systems, and Space Vehicle Mockup facilities at JSC.
- Knowledge of NASA operations, facility management, and emergency preparedness.
- Experience across systems engineering lifecycle (requirements analysis, design, documentation) and working within Integrated Product Teams (IPTs).
- Ability to apply for and maintain security clearance per eligibility requirements.
Compensation: $100,000 (good-faith estimate; actual compensation may vary based on job responsibilities, education, experience, and other factors).
