Project ContextOklahoma Aluminum (Project Thunder) is a greenfield primary aluminum smelter development in Inola, Oklahoma, led by Emirates Global Aluminum (EGA) in a joint venture with Century Aluminum. This is the first new U.S. primary aluminum smelter project since 1980 and aims to expand domestic aluminum production and the North American supply base.
The project is led by a Capture Manager and supported by Houston-based leadership, the Alumina & Aluminum Center of Excellence, and an international team providing technical expertise to lead the study to completion.
Job SummaryThis role is responsible for mechanical equipment packages in an aluminum project, with leadership in interdisciplinary meetings with the client and equipment suppliers. You will lead and execute the design, development, modification, and evaluation of mechanical components and processes, coordinating with other disciplines. You will propose solutions that address the mechanical requirements of the project and ensure they meet complex technical and regulatory standards.
MajorResponsibilities
- Design mechanical equipment and systems for mining industry projects, including pumps for water, slurries, solvents, distribution networks, pneumatic transport, metal handling, and related systems.
- Perform calculations and analyses to inform sizing and selection of mechanical equipment.
- Prepare material requests, specifications, data sheets, and other technical documents for procurement of equipment.
- Assist and lead in supplier evaluation and tender technical reviews.
- Coordinate with mechanical designers to produce designs and drawings according to project standards.
- Collaborate with other disciplines and engineering teams, including clients, suppliers, contractors, and construction groups.
- Develop conceptual studies, designs, reports, or proposals.
- Provide technical assistance to mechanical personnel and interact with project functions and the client to resolve regulatory issues with knowledge of industry codes and standards.
- Support project and construction management to identify and meet mechanical requirements and address issues during execution.
Requires a degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering and a minimum of 15 years of relevant work experience in mining.
Required Knowledge and Skills- Proven experience sizing and selecting equipment, material handling systems, tanks, and agitators.
- Knowledge of processes and equipment used for copper extraction in leaching plants (mandatory).
- Field experience in the mining and metals industry (mandatory).
- Knowledge of calculating water, acid, and pulp networks.
- Knowledge of calculations for air networks, HVAC, deposits, and fire protection systems (desirable).
- Ability to apply technical knowledge to solve problems, complete tasks, and advise others.
- Ability to operate with professional autonomy.
- Experience in aluminum smelter projects.
