DescriptionJob Summary:
The primary purpose of the Process Safety Technology Engineer (PSTE) is to ensure adherence to process safety guidelines (RAGAGEP) through process design and hazard recognition. The PSTE coordinates the efforts of other disciplines (SIS, mechanical integrity, etc.) to address identified PSM gaps through all stages of engineering. The PSTE will be the company recognized subject matter expert on issues regarding process safety.
In addition, the PSTE will develop expertise in TPC processes to understand process safety impacts.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Technical authority and resource for process safety technologies (PRDs, flare systems, dispersion analyses, etc.) for all TPC processes
- Develop unit production expertise, continuously building a body of technical knowledge around unit operations and processes
- Lead inherent process safety in design concepts through ownership and updating of key TPC process safety GEMS
- Develop high level project scopes for unit related improvement projects and projects to address identified PSM gaps.
- Provide technical leadership to operations, R&D and Corporate Development for evaluation and implementation of new projects
- Actively support PSM programs via participation in PHA, LOPA, MOC, RCA, resolution of action items, and other activities to ensure safe and reliable operation and regulatory compliance
- Leads technical teams and multi-disciplinary groups in evaluations of complex problems and issues relating to process safety compliance
- Develops, assesses the feasibility, soundness, and safety of designs and proposes solutions based on sound engineering judgment
- Leads front end loading and scope development for new projects and PSM gap projects and transitions to detailed engineering and on to start up. Provides operating procedure development and training where necessary.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in the chemical engineering field which includes experience in a refinery or petrochemical plant with unit operation simulation, process optimization, and process safety experience in either a production or process engineering role
- Basic skills in simulation tools including ASPEN+, HYSIS, and or PROSIM
- Communication and leadership skills with cross-functional teams
- Ability to manage ambiguity, communicate and lead effectively in cross-functional teams
Preferred Qualifications:
- PE Licensure preferred but not required
- Butadiene or partial hydrogenation process experience in either Operations and/or Process Engineering
- Specific experience with fixed bed reactors, industrial catalysis processes, distillation, and/or extractive distillation
