Position: R&D Metallography Technician (Forgings Metals)

PURPOSE
The primary responsibility for this position is performing metallographic tests and procedures in the Advanced Product Development group in support of internal and externally funded programs. Responsibilities include preparation of samples, rating microstructures to customer specifications and doing failure investigations. Secondary duties will include, but are not limited to, working in the APD forge shop to support production and development activities.

Prepare and examine metallography specimens for production and development. Maintain specimen record. Investigation report, ratings and photographs.
Maintain APD metallurgical laboratory Smooth functioning of the lab

Challenges
Maintain high standard of metallurgical specimen preparation.
Do routine metallographic analysis such as grain size rating.
Attain customer certification for grain size rating.
Familiarity with preparation practices for alloy and material types and develop practices for new materials.
Maintain/manage equipment in the APD laboratory.
Maintain good working knowledge of APD shop equipment and practices.
Contribute to development activities.

Requirements - Education/Experience

  • High School diploma with at least 2 years of college in a STEM or technical field. Knowledge of metallography laboratory practices, use of lab equipment.
  • Minimum of 5 years in an industrial and/or laboratory environment.
  • Adept at handling equipment and analytical instruments.
Special Skills
  • Practical experience with the materials, chemicals and equipment used in metallographic preparation.
  • Knowledge of grain size rating procedures.
  • Mechanical aptitude and competence working with lab and shop equipment
  • Computer literacy.
  • Communications skills and ability to work with colleagues in the APD shop and other departments
